Meet Stephen Loi | Placement Specialist for Seniors & Sick and Chaplain

We had the good fortune of connecting with Stephen Loi and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Stephen, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
10 years ago, in 2015, I started working in the medical field for Home Health, Palliative and Hospice services for the seniors and the sick as a placement specialist and Chaplain. I got my bachelor’s degree in Marketing from Oxford Brookes University and Master of Divinity degree from Oral Roberts University (ORU.edu). The founder of ORU, Oral Roberts always said “Make no little plans here.” After working for a year, I decided to step out by faith to become an independent contractor and started my own website www.StephenLoi.com. I realized that many new immigrants did not know this medical service is free through their own existing health insurance such as Medical, Medicare or private insurance. I wanted to cater to them, especially the Asian and Chinese community living in the Southern California area.
Risk taking: how do you think about risk, what role has taking risks played in your life/career?
When I first started the job, I was doing very well. After 6 months, my pay was double and I was making 6 figure salary with full time benefits. But after working for a year, I felt led by God to quit my full time job and became an independent contractor for medical companies, in order to reach out to ethnic groups and minority communities. It was very risky because I started with having only 20 patients, barely enough to support my family, on top of paying rent and car payments. During that time, I get spiritual support from my church Bread of Life Christian Church (https://blccla.org), Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship International Chinese Chapter (www.fgbmfiusa.org), and Christian Business Partners (https://cbpnetworking.com). Most importantly, I have a godly wife Pearl who is always by my side supporting and praying for me.
Where are you from and how did your background and upbringing impact who you are today?
I am Chinese originally from Malaysia and I came from a Christian family. My dad was a pastor and church planter. My faith in my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ played a very important role in my business decisions. When I became an independent contractor, I asked God for 120 patients. Little did I know, during Covid time, I was managing more than 300 patients a month! God gave me so much more than what I could ask, think or imagine. All glory to God.
What is the most important factor behind your success / the success of your brand?
I am in the people business. My job is to solve people’s problems with the use of medical benefits and help from God. Customer service is my top priority. I keep track of their wants from their first phone call and I tried to meet their needs by walking the extra mile. I believe in being efficient, working hard and finding ways to provide excellent service with God’s help. I believe the God factor is the most important part of my success. “People who know their God shall be strong, and carry out great exploits.”
(Daniel 11:32) Recently, In order to provide a better service, I started helping patients dealing with wound care, especially stage 3 & 4 wound. We can accept all insurance anywhere in California, including Medical, Private Insurance or Medicare.
Work life balance: how has your balance changed over time? How do you think about the balance?
When I first got married in 2005, God already promised us children and given us names of our children, Daniel and Elizabeth. However, only after 19 years later, long enduring prayers and after 9 IVF egg retrievals, was that promised being fulfilled. Now as a father of a boy and a girl, my days off are when my daughter is not having daycare and I tried to minimize calls during night time and weekends to spend quality time with my family, unless it’s an emergency. Also, I tried to have long vacations several times a year to spend quality time with my family.
