Meet Stephen Mirich | Artist – fine art, painting

We had the good fortune of connecting with Stephen Mirich and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Stephen, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
I’ve created art all my life, starting when I was very young. It has been a natural part of my life along with many other interests. Although my art career has always been in the forefront, I’ve not let it take away from other experiences and or duties. The income from doing art work hasn’t always been steady either, so I’ve had many other jobs or sidelines over the years as well as years of care giving to a parent. If anything, I feel this all goes to enriching life itself. Now at 71, time itself feels more limited in years left. I am more involved in my art that ever before. Not in any kind of business success but just to live as an artist and always the learning, practice and continual growth.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I believe you know what interests you at a very early age. Perhaps it is within our genes. I was four years old when I tried to make a copy of a drawing of spacemen that was in the news paper. I was not successful but, I became more curious on how it was done. What I did understand right then was a person made that drawing and someday if I work at it, I too will be able to. This opened the door to continuing to learn and see. Most artists will tell you that art is a life-long persuit.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would start right at home. Cooking being my second most interest; Probably with a great dinner and inviting other artists for an evening of meeting and sharing conversation. Now, my friend is probably an artist too, so we will most likely go out painting together where I can share some of my favorite location. We may go visiting other studios, galleries and museums. But as often as I could, I would bring my friends together.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Probably goes without needing to say but I would most certainly recognize my mother and family first. That is the first solid foundation you stand on as a child. From there it becomes community. My friends, students, neighbors, teachers and eventually, art organizations and fellow piers.
