We had the good fortune of connecting with Daniela Amaya and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Daniela, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I always felt that I was meant for the creative field. As a kid I wanted to be a pastry chef, letting sugar be the medium in which I expressed myself in. Instead, I ended up in the fashion industry, which really wasn’t a surprise; I would make clothes for my Barbies out of scrap fabric and draft patterns for felt teddy bears that would later hand-sew and embellish myself. It wasn’t until high school and joining our fashion design club that it truly clicked and I wanted to pursue a career in fashion.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Premier Amour was founded right after I graduated FIDM; I didn’t have a vision of what it could be yet, I just knew I wanted to create things that people loved. At that time I wanted to create items that were vintage-inspired, which hadn’t had the boom it now has. I was elated to have my first sale, a pale mint 1960’s inspired dress that looking back now could have used a few improvements. Now I am proud to say many dresses later that I have vastly improved the quality of every piece I produce. Trial and error were my best mentors in that I saw what items were successful and where to focus my energy on. There were some passion projects that worked out and some that didn’t, but in the long run it taught me to open my mind to new possibilities and ideas. I want people to know that without love for your brand or what you do, you won’t be able to connect to your audience, so always do things with love.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Southern California has some of the best spots for entertainment, eating out, etc. but for me personally I like to go to places that don’t feel like you’re in L.A. Sometimes you don’t have to travel outside the U.S. to feel like you visited somewhere foreign. One of my absolute favorite places in the entire world (I truly mean it) has to be the Huntington Library in San Marino; You could spend days here and see something new each time. You could be in a gorgeous Chinese garden, a European art gallery, or surrounded by Southwestern flora all in the span of one afternoon in one location. It’s a fantastic place to just catch your breath and enjoy the beautiful surroundings, with a few selfies to remember your stay. Another place with amazing views that feels like you stepped into a futuristic scene is The Getty. Housed in the Getty are some of the most beautiful pieces of art SoCal has to offer, with no shortage of activities to fill an afternoon there. If you want to grab a bite and feel like you’re at a French bistro, I highly recommend Bottega Louie. The restaurant serves delicious food with a fantastic brunch menu on the weekends, but their pastries are the stars of the show; there is a vast selection of desserts that you really won’t know which ones to pick, but I very highly recommend their famous macarons. Of all the macarons I’ve tried, these by far have to be the best ones I’ve had. Pick up a box of these colorful little beauties after spending the day exploring to top off a fun afternoon.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I wouldn’t have gotten this far without the support of my family and friends who have always been cheering me on and giving me unconditional support. It’s been over 10 years since I decided to chase a career in fashion, and my support team has grown so much along the way. Some aren’t so lucky to have family or friends that back your dreams, and sure there have been times when I questioned myself as to where I was heading in my career. Thanks to the absolutely amazing support and love from my family and friends, I knew that what ever I chose to do, they would be behind me 100%.
