We had the good fortune of connecting with Stephen Silver and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Stephen, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
When creating my new online art school –www.silverdrawingacademy.com my thought process was that I wanted to create a way for artists to learn from all my years of experience in one place. I wanted to share the tools that I have acquired my last 30 years of being a professional and in order to do this, I had to create a real game plan which was to put together hundreds of 5 minute lessons and exercises, that are bite size and easy to learn from. Within the platform, I know that it is not just about art techniques, but about being inspired and motivated. In order for me to address theses aspects of learning I have included motivational videos and an entire community section to bring artists together, as well. I am very excited to share all my techniques with artists around the world.

In developing a business, it is usually the case for me that some ideas will be more successful than others and in order to breakthrough the bad ideas, I have learned to look at each failure as a stepping stone into a better direction. This helps a lot. Drawing professionally and owning a business requires a great deal of dedication, time, and practice and in order for me to improve I had to keep setting goals for myself as to when I am going to draw more and when I am going to learn about the business side of art. The most important lessons I have learned along the way, is to follow up and follow through. My personal quote is “Piece by Piece will bring you Peace” It’s important not to do too much at one time, but in small bites, for me this has been the most effective way for me to learn and create, and it was for this reason when I started my Silver Drawing Academy online platform. I feel my main mission and purpose in this life comes from a desire to help, motivate and train artists and it is for this reason I developed the platform. It was a way for me to wake up in the morning, energetic and also challenged to make something work where I could be in control. I have many ideas that I come up with and by owning my own business, I don’t have to rely on someone else telling me what I can or can’t do. There is a freedom to that.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have worked in the animation industry for over 25 years designing characters for the major animation studios including Disney’s Kim Possible and Nickelodeon’s Danny Phantom and many more.  Professionally, I have kept busy working freelance from home, I have published 14 books over the last 20 years, and I do workshops and lectures for games studios, toy companies, animation studios, and colleges all over the world. My passion is teaching and inspiring artists of all levels. One of the traits that I feel sets me apart from other Character Designers is that I am always reinventing myself. Getting to where I am today has been an enjoyable path, although it was not always easy.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I always love meeting up with artist friends to grab a coffee and draw. When friends of mine visit, I like to take them to the beach. From Newport Beach to Malibu, there are so many great beaches. Grabbing sushi is always a must. There is a restaurant called Blue Finn in Simi Valley that is my favorite. Going out for drinks usually means going to a great hang out with a cool vibe like Stonehaus in Westlake Village, or just grabbing a beer.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to give a shout out to my twin brother who owns a DJ business, providing fun, engaging music and entertainment for all types of events. His name is Graham Silver at www.silvertunes.com
