We had the good fortune of connecting with Steven Armstrong and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Steven, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
The thing about work life balance is that its constantly changing for me as I get older. I got a full time job, I write everyday, I try and do stand up as often as I can, I’m acting in a couple of different projects, I have a girlfriend that I live with. All of these things became more constant in the last few years. Who knows how many things I’m going to have to balance ten years from now. I found that the key things to concentrate on are work, health and relationships. Making time for all those makes me feel like I have purpose.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I got to where I am by learning as much as I can through failure. I’m constantly trying to put myself through new creative outlets and getting better at it. I always loved telling stories. I studied theatre in school and despite crippling stage fright I was able to be in service of good stories by acting in plays and short films. Then when I graduated and Covid paralyzed the world there were no plays or films being made but there were still stand up shows happening on the sidewalks of the comedy clubs. So I tried my hand at that and after months of bombing and standing in deafening silence I was finally being greeted with laughter. That gave me the confidence to write longer form jokes and stories. Now I write sketches, films, tv pilots, and plays. All of these creative outlets came from me messing around and finding out. And what I found out is I’m pretty good at this stuff.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I grew up in LA county and still am constantly finding new things to do and look at. I will say this. A great way to start your day is going to RE: Coffee or La La’s. And no trip to Los Angeles has ever been complete without the beach. After that you can go out to dinner at any number of restaurants in the valley. Vitellos is my girlfriend and I’s favorite date spot especially if you get a table in the rendition room. Later we can go see who’s headlining The Comedy Store. That seems like a pretty ideal day but I got to work the rest of the week, man. You’re on your own.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I don’t think I would have the confidence to keep doing what I’m doing without the support of my family, my girlfriend Allie Yannetti, my friends over at Stereogram films and the guy who keeps directing my scripts Joe Laporte.
