We had the good fortune of connecting with Susan Chen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Susan, we’d love to hear what makes you happy.
Living my life in alignment. When I wake up in the morning feeling excited for the day, knowing I get to do what I want to be doing, I feel so happy. And then, going to sleep at night feeling satisfied that I spent the day living authentically. It gives me great satisfaction.

I think the definition of happiness is to live your life according to the way your heart sings and the way your emotions guide you to move. It’s so important! For me, following that joy and alignment has become that guiding light for me.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am a Vedic Meditation teacher leading courses out of LA and New York City. All of the courses I teach are in-person, and in order to teach the mantras and tradition I went through a 12-week Initiator Training in India with the premier leaders of this technique.

My teaching style is very high-touch, tailored, and personalized, with plenty of follow-up teaching and check-ins for my students who receive a Vedic Meditation mantra. This style of meditation is the most powerful style for releasing stress, lowering anxiety, and allowing your most natural self to effortlessly come through in more and more conscious and expansive ways. Since we learn it in person and the tradition is 5,000+ years old, the practice is different than meditation apps or guided YouTube meditations. We practice for twenty minutes twice every day, and we consistently see reduced stress and increased happiness cumulatively build with every meditation.

How did you get to where you are business-wise, was it easy?
This goes back to what I said earlier about what makes me happy. Once I started living in true alignment with what I wanted to do, business became very easy. There was a point in my life from 2018-2020 where I had a lot going on and a finger in every pie, so to speak. I was feeling stretched thin, and even though I was good at each area of my work, it wasn’t bringing me deep satisfaction. Once I simplified my time commitments, I began to feel more effortless and aligned, and my meditation business grew. What it took was simplifying my time and tuning in to my heart to feel what I most wanted.

The most important lesson I’ve learned is that I’m working on my students’ and clients’ timelines, not on my own. I’ll always be the most enthusiastic person about meditation in the room, and I’ve learned to meet my community where they are to make the biggest difference for them. Each of my students and clients is on their own journey, so when I can pace to their needs, I can help them invite the transformation that I’ve experienced in my own life.

What do you want the world to know about your brand and story?
I want them to know that there is an easy, simple, and natural solution to whatever emotional imbalances they might experience in their lives, like overwhelm, anxiety, physical struggles, and even grief. And, it’s not so much that there is a magical solution that you have to find in an Amazonian jungle, or you have to wait until the next lifetime to experience it. A sense of ease, relaxedness, and flow in life is available right here and now with a consistent meditation practice.

I’m happy to teach it to anyone and everyone because it shouldn’t be a secret how to live your life in more alignment and attunement with nature. It takes four days to do the Learn to Meditate course and receive a Vedic Meditation mantra, and once completed, you have a lifetime practice that can ease stress like no other technique I’ve ever experienced.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My favorite places to eat are Din Tai Fung, Petramale Pizza (Fridays at Venice Church), and Kye’s in Venice! We are at Ginger’s in Culver City for ice cream on the regular. I recommend sunrise swims at Pier 26 in Santa Monica, seeing the sunset at Lighthouse Beach, and meditating in my garden studio in Mar Vista in the afternoon.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?

Yes, I’d like to dedicate this shoutout to our worldwide Vedic Meditation community, who continue to inspire me as a teacher every day. It’s a community of hundreds of thousands if not millions of meditators who supported me in my journey toward more alignment, more calm, and more bliss.

It’s so special to share a twice-daily practice with a group of people who are learning the same philosophies and very interested in personal growth. Whether it’s my teachers, the Maharishis who continue the tradition, my fellow Vedic Mediation teachers, or the students’ whose lives have changed with regular practice, all of these people motivate and inspire me. I’d like to dedicate this shoutout to them!
