We had the good fortune of connecting with Susie Jun and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Susie, other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?
I wanted to make my passion my career and I wanted to make a difference in people’s lives. I never felt passion or an authentic drive at any of my jobs. I simply was there to just clock-in/clock-out and get my pay check. But now, I hold so much joy in my work and my business. I have built amazing relationships with my clients and seeing their lives change for the better is a really an amazing feeling.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business is all about about empowering women through results-driven facial treatments and corrective skincare to help build their confidence and inner strength. I think what sets me apart from others is my own experience and my life story that I have had with acne. It was through dealing with acne for many, many years that I came to love myself and from that stemmed a big heart to help others with their own skin and their confidence as well. I’m really proud that my business stems from such a strong and powerful backstory because it helps me to relate with my clients on a deeper level. I know what they’re going through and they don’t have to go through their skin struggles alone. I want people to know that their appearance doesn’t have to hold them back and that it doesn’t define who they are.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Hands down, we are going to Disneyland! I’ve grown up with Disney my entire life and it defines my childhood. Disneyland does such a great job of really making it feel like you’re in a dream. I’ve never had a bad day at Disneyland. After that, automatically making our way to Los Angeles. I mainly grew up in Orange County, CA and my business is based there too, BUT, I love The City of Angels 20x more. I always feel more at home every time I’m in LA. We would go LACMA, watch a rooftop movie in DTLA, get authentic street tacos, watch the sunset at Santa Monica Beach, and then grab ice cream at Wanderlust Creamery. Honestly the list goes on and on. Los Angeles has so much to offer and you never run out of things to do there.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my shout outs to my business coaches: M’Lisa & Royal Ellis of Spa Strong LLC and one of my best friends and fellow esthetician: Sandy Nguyen.
My first year in business was SO HARD. I cried every other week because my business was not where I wanted it to be. I wasn’t getting many clients and I really felt like a failure and an embarrassment. On top of that, in the middle of my first year, we got hit with Covid-19. I had to close down my business for several months. This made things even worse. Then I decided I needed outside help. I wasn’t going to let my business wither away. I found Spa Strong LLC on Instagram and through their coaching, they helped me become the CEO and esthetician that I needed to be. Their mentorship and guidance not only saved my business, but it GREW my business. I owe so much to them. I am now so much more confident as a business owner and as a person. I couldn’t have done it without their help.
And to Sandy Nguyen. She is one of my best friends and we met through esthetician school. We share a lease together at our current location where we both run our own businesses. She cheers me up when I’m feeling down and she is always encouraging me. Entrepreneur life can get lonely and dark at times, but I can always count on her to lift me up. Sandy is my rock. I don’t know what I would do without her.
