We had the good fortune of connecting with Synthia Balmaceda and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Synthia, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I believe taking risks are exactly what led me to where I am now. It wasn’t until I took the risk to leave my life behind in FL to move to LA, after failing nursing school and working in the service industry for years, that I truly understood what I was capable of. Being in a new environment where you know absolutely no one forces you to take chances you wouldn’t normally take in order to experience things you would’ve never experienced. Now I own my own Lash and Brow business called All Dolled Up by Syn, which I never would’ve had the guts to start up had I not taken the risk and gone for it.
What should our readers know about your business?
I’ve always loved eyebrows ever since I plucked mine pencil thin, behind my Father’s back when I was 15. I think having a good set of sister brows can enhance anyone’s face and even the way they feel about themselves. When I first started my business I honestly hated lashing as it was so tedious, I only wanted to Microblade. The more clients I lashed the more organized my sets looked and my lash time went down from 3.5 hours to 2 hours. Now almost 80% of my clients are lash clients and I couldn’t love it any more! It definitely has not been an easy journey starting a business during the pandemic in a brand new state where you know no one and have a newborn baby at home waiting to be breastfed, but hard work, consistency, and organization pay off!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This is my favorite topic! There are so many reasons to love California and I just love when I can contribute to my friends and family falling in love with California the same way I have. One week is the minimum time I tell friends and family to visit for because there’s just so much to do! Some of my most favorite places to go are Malibu (El Matador Beach & Point Dume), San Diego (La Jolla), Hollywood (The Griffith Observatory & The Walk of Fame), Santa Monica Pier, and Downtown LA. There is so much good food in LA which is why my favorite place is Smorgasburg LA which is temporarily closed due to COVID but they have a bunch of food trucks to chose from and even some local vendors! My favorite place to drink is definitely WEHO because there’s a whole strip dedicated to getting dressed up and going out for drinks and a good time!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
By far my biggest motivation is my son. I think if it weren’t for him, I would still be working in the service industry and I never would’ve pursued my dreams of owning my own business.
