We had the good fortune of connecting with Tallulah Daly and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tallulah, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Your digital identity matters and everyone exists online, from the private chef to the all-natural and environmentally conscious skin care brand.
Malibu is a small town with a big name, and even bigger expenses. I wanted Bluewater Road Tech & Design to be a realistic option for small businesses in my community. If you Google, “I need a website”, you’ll find costs of $10,000-15,000 minimum. I hated that, I didn’t want BRTD to have a minimum, and that’s why there’s no company too small for us.
The pandemic created a moment of stillness; I decided to leave New York, and I was encouraged to work East Coast hours after moving back to Los Angeles. During lots of afternoon runs around the neighborhood and many cups of tea with my roommate (my mom), this new schedule allowed me to identify a need amongst small business owners; a high quality website without corporate cost. And so became BRTD.
In the last year, I have worked with women-led companies as well as locally-launched companies throughout California, and I could not be more grateful to have been a part of creating their online identities. I’m overjoyed to see what’s in store for BRTD in its second year since inception.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I work in the healthcare tech space for the leading cost containment company as a Product Owner. As a PO, I ensure our teams build features that address client needs and business stakeholder preferences. Just before founding BRTD, I had been tasked with shaping our new national product. In order to make key decisions, I had to deep dive into data analytics to understand the minds of our users. Not long after, I plummeted into the rabbit hole that is UX & UI (user experience and user interface). I was obsessed. And at which point, I found myself at 2pm everyday, done with work, and wanting to keep going. Now, I spend my hours after 2:30pm working for BRTD clients and ensuring their needs are met.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m up just before the sunrise most mornings because of working in LA on East Coast hours. When friends are visiting, I make sure we get to The Old Place as early as possible for strong coffee and the most magical cinnamon rolls, before they run out. Morning drives down Mullholland in my big blue 1968 Ford pickup are therapeutic. Now we are back in Malibu to enjoy a beach day at Surfrider.
As sunset rolls around, we head into town for a beautiful meal at Great White in Venice. Their homemade lager is so smooth, it pairs almost too well with the blackened salmon curry. This spot is totally worth the hype, it’s a place where vegetarians can thrive, the music appeals to every generation, and you can even find inspiration in their minimal but very effective branding – peep the t-shirts & beer cans and you’ll know what I mean.
We end the night running across the street to see a live show at the Winston House, where I always feel like I’m at the right place at the right time.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My brilliant mother, Maria. She has such a youthful and vibrant presence about her. The energy she exudes has fueled me to accomplish so many of the things I’m proud of. Without that contagious energy and her admiration for intelligence, I wouldn’t have started Bluewater Road Tech & Design.
