We had the good fortune of connecting with Tessa Markle and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tessa, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
I’ve come to accept the fact that the scales will never actually be balanced. As long as you have all the categories of your life up on the scale and it’s not tipping over with weight from any one individually, you can be happy and successful. I tend to be a workaholic by nature, but I’ve become much more aware of it and able to catch myself when I start down that rabbit hole. The solution? Sometimes it’s taking time off of my day job. Sometimes it’s just implementing a little more self-care. Sometimes it’s hitting pause, making a list of priorities (I love lists), and setting aside specific time for work and for play. There’s no one universal answer or solution but the biggest takeaway is that you do need to allow yourself time. Allow yourself time to accomplish the “important things”. Allow yourself time to pursue your passions. Allow yourself time to nurture your relationships. And allow yourself time to just relax.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Before moving to LA, I only had experience as a theatre actor and a background actor. Once I realized how many things I could dip my toe in out here, I jumped right in. My main goal as an actor is to be in period piece drama films. Anything from the renaissance to a western to the 1920’s! The thing is, I love so many things. I also love performing comedy and much to my surprise, fell in love with comedic commercials too. On top of that, I’m pursuing a voiceover career (that is, as much as my noisy studio apartment allows) and just recently booked my second audiobook narration! Finally, once theaters reopen, I would love to get back to the stage, even if solely for my own enjoyment. I feel I have a unique story to tell, as we all do, and I bring that to every character I play. I’m not afraid to accept wild or weird roles and in fact get excited about those opportunities.
Keeping the excitement alive is what keeps me going and has gotten me to where I am today. It’s a difficult career path to follow and there were many times I’ve thought about giving up. But I know I wouldn’t be happy doing anything else, and if it doesn’t make you happy, why do it?
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The longer I spend in LA, the more I get excited about getting outside and in nature. And it’s much easier to do than people think. Sure, we’re in the middle of a giant metropolis, but everywhere you look, there’s opportunity to connect with the outdoors. Laguna is my favorite beach area, less than an hour south of LA, while Big Bear is probably my favorite mountainous area, just two hours north. Joshua Tree is an amazing dessert getaway about an hour and a half east, and there’s both State and National Parks all over the map from an hour to four away. Plus, there’s dozens of hikes right here in our backyard!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are so so so many people that have contributed to my success. The support I receive daily from family and friends is incredible. I know many people are not nearly as lucky and I am so grateful for them. I’m also extremely lucky to have found my production partner and podcast co-host, Carolina Alvarez. Without her, I would never have started a production company or a podcast. Having a business partner to bounce things off of and support you in both business and life has kept me sane, productive, and motivated.
I contribute my acting success to so many teachers and acting communities. I’m currently a member of Career ACTivate with Jona Xiao and the progress I’ve made since joining that community is incredible. I’m happy to share a list of teachers I’ve enjoyed working with and acting communities I’m a part of with any readers!
