We had the good fortune of connecting with Tetiana Kazak and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tetiana, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Honestly, I don’t think that my life/work balance could be considered healthy. I’m one of those people who’s work is their life. But that’s exactly the way I want it. The only thing that changed over time is my relationship with sleep. I realized that my health and productivity depends on the amount of sleep that I get. So I try to sleep 7-8hrs a day. If I have a night shift, I’ll sleep in as long as I can the next day. And I don’t feel guilty about it.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a makeup artist from Kiev, Ukraine, currently located in LA. I think that my overseas experience definitely sets me apart from other professionals. Back in Eastern Europe you have to be creative. You receive your task but most of the time you’re not given the budget to complete it. So being able to create cool things from scratch is my superpower. I’m also versatile in my skill set which gives me an opportunity to land diverse projects.
The lesson I learned is to be consistent. The more you work, the more opportunities will come along the way. Also don’t expect instant gratification, comparing yourself to other artist’s success could harm your own. Don’t be scared to invest money, time and effort in your education, portfolio or kit. Trust me, the more you give, the more you’ll get in return.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
That’s a tough question. One week in LA is not enough. But first of all, I would take my friends to the beach. Leo Carrillo and El Matador are my personal favorites. We’d also go to Broad Museum and MOCA, probably Universal studios. Salton sea and Vasquez rocks surely worth visiting.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
