We had the good fortune of connecting with The Late Great Charlie Borski and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi The Late Great, what makes you happy? Why?
The fact that this group of people was able to find each other and create this musical project. Some of our favorite things to do are play live shows to a crowd of smiling people or just jamming together as a band. So, in short, music. Music is what makes us happy.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
We started out by playing shows anywhere and everywhere: comedy shows, open mics, birthday parties, and even a cannabis-themed variety show hosted by Alexis Fawx. The only rule that we set for ourselves as a band was that we would never pay to play. It wasn’t easy. Some of our earlier shows had a pretty sparse crowd but it was still always worth playing. We were all juggling our own jobs to pay the bills while still trying to find the time for band practice and shows, plus being in charge of our own promotion and recording processes. We basically just said yes to almost everything and kept on trucking. The lessons we’ve learned: -always bring an extra quarter inch & guitar picks. -don’t string your instrument right before a show. -remind Will to put on deodorant. -no one’s gonna do it for you. You gotta put the work in yourself. We recently signed with Mannequin Vanity Records. Be on the look out for our upcoming album this year!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well, most places are shut down at the moment sooo….. the Ralph’s in Studio City? Or to volunteer at the Hahamongna Native Plant Nursery. Or for a surf lesson with Calibunga Surf Co. Or on a guided hike with Calibunga Adventures.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
One of the first bars we ever played was the Dresden in Los Feliz. They had a huge amount of faith in us early on and gave us our very first residency. We played there once a month for a year and a half before the world shut down. The Dresden is also where we met our sick ass audio engineer, Sailor Alexander. It’s a place near and dear to our hearts. Big shout out to Mark, Laurence, and Dana. They make the best dirty martinis in town!
