We had the good fortune of connecting with The Loopy Spoonie and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi The Loopy Spoonie, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I grew up having to buy speciality bath and body products because of my sensitive skin. Eventually as I developed more and more allergies I ended up having to learn to formulate my own specialty bath and body products. I discovered that there were many people who shared similar allergies and skin sensitivities so decided why not make a business out of it! I enjoy being able to provide specialized products to my community and also being able to show my artistry through those products.
What should our readers know about your business?
I launched my business in 2019 after 3 years of research and development. My business initially started with me selling my knitted and crocheted goods, then evolved to include my bath and body products for people with sensitive skin.
While the knitted/crocheted goods aspect of my business remains on hiatus until 2023, the bath and body products aspect is now the main focus of my business.
As I’ve previously mentioned, I have a very long list of allergens. When looking into the available homemade bath and body products market I noticed many of them featured coconut oil or some kind of Treenut oil as a main ingredient. As someone allergic to both I took on the challenge of formulating recipes that excluded those while also being vegan and environmentally friendly.
It took much trial and error but eventually I formulated recipes that worked not just for my skin but for many others with multiple allergens and skin sensitivities. There are many challenges when it comes to formulating bath and body products recipes but I enjoy every part of the process and am actively excited to keep learning and developing even more custom recipes.
One of the most important lessons I learned along the way was the importance of enjoying the process and pacing myself. As a disabled person I already have limited energy to work with on a daily basis. So when I decided to launch a business on top of my full time job, I had to learn quickly how not to overdo things or else I’d suffer the consequences.
I want the world to know that The Loopy Spoonie is dedicated to constant research and development to continue providing sensitive skin friendly bath and body products to any who need them.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Despite having many allergies and sensitivities, my ideal day would be spent trying different foods at different restaurants and doing something in between to relax like going to a book store! There aren’t too many places to go in my area so we’d likely make daily trips into the city in the next state over as it’s only about a 45 minute drive!
