We had the good fortune of connecting with Those Cupcakes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Those, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I’m picky! I would attend parties and there would be 1 cake flavor for 50-100 guests. I thought To myself, “It would be really cool if someone were at parties and you can tell them what kind of cupcake you want while making it right in front of you”. And, that’s exactly what I did. I began offering my clients the option to formulate a menu that their guests would be able to build individualized flavored cupcakes at their events (weddings, parties, industry events, etc.) I knew I had a product that the world would eventually appreciate and there was no reason for me NOT to offer my desserts.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business offers custom cakes and cupcakes for every occasion. We also offer a cupcake bar experience, where my business provides customized cupcakes “On the spot” for weddings, parties, and corporate events. We also provide free baking classes to girl scout troops as well as inner city toddlers with Toddler Tings. Being in business has not always been easy. The financial struggles of staying afloat were hard at first. Properly pricing my products was my biggest lesson in business.
I would love for people to know that my business is built on individuality and giving back. All of the tips that I collect throughout the year are used daily to feed individuals affected by poverty. Which is an amazing feeling.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m a pretty laid back individual when it comes to doing things.
Monday nights I love to hit El Compadres Mexican restaurant for their hard shell tacos and fire margaritas. (The top of the margarita is really on fire). I’ve been going there for yearsss.
Tuesday is my baking day so I like to stay calm and relaxed. Nothing like hitting Santa Monica Pier for a nice stroll and laughs.
I would absolutely have to take them roller skating at either Fountain Valley skating rink or Skate Express in Chino, Ca Wednesday or Thursday night with Dj Wayne or Dj Bert.
Friday night I would take them to Berkshire on La Brea with my guys Kev and Larry from Trap Kitchen. They have a live band, food and drinks so the vibe is fun and amazing. Nothing like it in LA
Saturdays are made for relaxation. So a walk through Griffith park is always a great vibe for me.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mother, Kathy Grant. She has been the most supportive and enthusiastic person in my corner. From the first big event to every single small order that graces my calendar, my mother has been right behind me. I don’t think I would of had the confidence to go out on a limb and quit nursing at one point in my baking journey had it not been for her support.
