We had the good fortune of connecting with Tidawhitney Lek and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tidawhitney, how do you think about risk?
Risk, to me, is like testing one’s comfortability and tolerance in order to find revelation. It challenges the ego, the psyche, and the subconsciousness. It takes quite a bit of spirit to stay optimistic even when you’re not in control of the outcome but sometimes it helps reveal considerations one may not have thought about, I usually find myself taking a risk when I can’t seem to find satisfaction in my results. And so I try for the sake of trying in hopes that the experience will offer some perspective.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a painter and my work focuses on family, first-generation and culture assimilation of an American life. Through the nuances of Cambodian culture it reflects the mundane yet unique aesthetic lifestyle imposed in a space like the home. It took me awhile to reach that level. I spent the last three years trying to deconstruct everything I had learned from school. I constantly questioned my relationship with relevancy and significance. What relationship did the work and I have with the world? I came to the conclusion that I needed to broaden my perspective and the views of others and to create opportunities for those who might not have had the chance. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shout out to all of my friends and artists for the love and support, Juliana Bustillo, Joshua Vasquez, Elmer Guevara, Cynthia Lujan, Sovanchann Sorn, Narsiso Martinez, Christian Franzen and many many more. And to all the folks I have worked alongside with who’ve encouraged me to continue my practice. Spaces like Flatline in North Long Beach run by Elizabeth Munzon, my former professors from Cal State Long Beach Marie Thibeault and Siobhan McClure and the many more faces I’ve grown to know as I continue down this path.
