We had the good fortune of connecting with Tiffany Chi and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tiffany, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
“I long so much to make beautiful things, but beautiful things require effort and disappointment and perseverance.” – Vincent Van Gogh This quote hangs on the wall of my home office and reminds me daily that I was made to create beautiful things, and beautiful things are seldom perfect. They take time, failure, and hard work. I often feel compelled to chase after perfection that doesn’t exist. There is a silent, pressing inertia within me that wonders if I could just create until the dissatisfaction disappears, then I can finally be at peace, or maybe that I’d be done with the constant frustration that creating requires.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a natural light motherhood photographer and formerly a pastry chef. I began my studies at UCLA, earning a degree in Fine Arts with a concentration in Painting, Photography, as well as French Language and Culture. After I graduated, I spent a year on the World Race: A Christian Outreach Organization who partners with local nonprofits and churches internationally and sends volunteers to 11 countries in 11 months. My experience over the last ten years truly informed the person that I am today. I had my camera on me during those 11 months and was able to capture so many stories from people all over the world, and it continues to drive my passion of documenting stories. When I returned home after that year, I decided to apply for a pastry degree at an internationally renowned French culinary school. During my time in Paris, I met my husband, Alexandre, working at a local patisserie. We moved back to California shortly after, and I became a mother. My life has certainly not been conventional, but I decided to pursue Photography, and specifically Motherhood Photography because I continually return to the intersection of my own story and the stories of other women in their journey through motherhood. Becoming a mother was the single most life-changing experience that I’ve ever had — and I’ve had a lot! A painfully memorable part of my own journey was the loneliness and isolation I often felt as a new mom, and my heart is to be able to come alongside other mothers and help them to feel less alone. I want them to know that their stories matter, and that they matter.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
It’s a little difficult to say, given that we are in the middle of a pandemic 🙁 I would say for their itinerary, it would be the guest room, the bathroom, the kitchen, and the living room. We could maybe be adventurous and take a walk in our residential community, or maybe even check the mail. Okay, but in theory . . . My husband Alex often has friends from France come visit, and we always recommend 1. Disneyland, for a pineapple Dole Whip and Gumbo Bowl, obvi. 2. The Beach (My favorite beach is Corona del Mar) 3. In N Out for a Grilled Cheese and Animal Fries paired with a Drive in Movie at the Mission Tiki Drive In 4. A Day Trip to San Diego 5. The Getty Museum and / or LACMA 6. Fashion Island / Irvine Spectrum / An Outlet Mall for Shopping
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to give a Shoutout to my husband, Alexandre Chi: he is my anchor, who encourages me when I doubt, and pushes me to be better, to chase my dreams, and to live without any regrets. I’d also like to Shoutout to The Fount Collective, a Community of Motherhood Photographers whose workshop I attended and inspired me to fully launch my business.
