We had the good fortune of connecting with Tiffany Jamison and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tiffany, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned throughout my career and especially in my last position as Director of Sales and Marketing is that you cannot be all the things, to all the people. We all have strengths and areas we excel in. Once you focus on what you’re good at and apply that to your business, you will see your business start to grow and celebrate the great impact you make on your client’s business. In the ever-evolving world of marketing, it’s absolutely impossible to know how to do all the things. Trying to sell yourself as an industry expert in every area of marketing in an unrealistic path to go down. My personal plan for my career is to continue educating myself in my industry, evolving and growing my skill set. As passionate as I am about growth and opportunity, I have learned the hard way that you cannot know every tactic, strategy, social media channel, PR pitch, etc. 100% and be an expert. You have to build a team, ask questions and bow out when it’s not a good fit. Having this mindset has allowed me to strategically guide clients through their business plan, crafting their message and brand to meet the needs of their target, not everyone and anyone, but their specific target. I am constantly evaluating the market and what is working and what is not. I enjoy taking on challenging clients and situations. But, at the end of the day, my reputation is tied to everything I do professionally and I am not willing to risk that just to say, I am an expert in everything.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started my marketing career working for a large agency that worked with Kimberly Clark. I was an account executive, leading strategic planning for KC in retailers Babies R Us, Costco and Toys R Us. The pace was fast and the competition was unforgiving. I learned a ton! One thing I learned early on is what it meant to be a team player and mentor. I saw the importance in collaboration, lifting others up and being a sounding board for others. I want the world to know that a positive and encouraging work environment makes all the difference in loyalty and top-notch work. When you feel appreciated, it doesn’t even make it seem like work. The success of my brand is a combined effort of my entire team, not just my personal efforts. I got where I was today by providing opportunity for others, being a loyal employee and taking pride in helping management navigate through challenging times. Clients can tell right away if you are a solution-based leader and this is something I pride myself on.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
A big part of Ohio is the love the community has for our amazing small businesses. I would definitely spend the day giving a tour of all of my personal favorites. We would have brunch at the Blue Door Cafe, coffee from Cafe Arnone, shopping at Leaf Home and Blooms and then drinks and dinner at Alexander Pierce. If we needed late-night pizza, we would for sure go to Luigi’s in Akron. One of my favorite spas is Paloma and shopping in the Short North in Columbus after a massage makes for a perfect day. Before concluding the weekend would head to Kelsey Elizabeth’s Bakery for a macaron care package to to take home.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband is definitely the most encouraging, understanding and supportive person I know. He encouraged me to start my own agency and has been my cheerleader all along he way. The words “you’re killing it” are always coming out of his mouth. We celebrate the smallest of opportunities the same way we celebrate the huge opportunities, it’s all a win.
