We had the good fortune of connecting with Tiffany Lagod and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tiffany, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I wish I had something impressive to say about risk but I don’t because risk sucks. The unknown, the doubt – all in all taking risks is tough. It keeps you up at night analyzing every decision, makes you second guess yourself, and at times can be paralyzing. Yet without taking risks in my career I wouldn’t have made any progress. The way I’ve learned to approach it, is to acknowledge that risk is present and then do my best to not let it stop me at every turn. With my company the risks were immediate, leading with quitting a job I loved in order to do something I’d only dreamed about. Everything in my life and career that has meant the most to me has always been on the other side of risk, both minor and major. In the end, I look at risks the way I look at my husband crunching on a bag of chips: “God that’s horrible, but there isn’t anything I can do about it, so better just keep going.”

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
LAGOD began as a vision to create a collection of everyday pieces that I would want to wear as my own daily “uniform.”  The idea was to create an easy, cohesive collection of minimal, modern, high quality pieces for everyday wear that can still rise to any occasion. The goal is that everything in the collection works together and compliments each other, which is why we currently only sell in black and white.  As we continue to grow, we will be adding more earth tone type color options to the collection.

Since starting LAGOD I’ve discovered that I’m not alone in wanting a minimalist closet of mostly black and white, classic, easy to wear pieces. I’m constantly meeting and talking to women who tell me they want their closet to look and feel the same. Simple and easy doesn’t mean boring; it’s fashionable, sexy, sophisticated and chic. We just hope to make your decision of “what to wear” each day a whole lot easier.

The second half of our story is sustainability. This is a broad and widely used term, but our business model is designed specifically to clean up waste fabric. There are extra rolls of the most incredible, luxurious and beautiful fabrics lying around LA at fabric suppliers and manufacturing companies that have become “dead stock” or unusable to most for one reason or another. Why this happens is a longer conversation, which I’d love to get into at another time. Instead of letting this fabric go to waste, we use the dead stock fabric that we’ve sourced from Italy, Portugal, Los Angeles and beyond. Our focus will always be to make high quality product while contributing positively to the Fashion Industry and cleaning up waste fabric one roll and one garment at a time.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

I live in Santa Monica with my husband and one year old son, so my go to’s for the best time ever would have been so much more fun 2 years ago ha … these are some of our go to spots in our neighborhood.

Take a run through Santa Monica, down the California Incline to the beach path.

Stop at Bluestone Lane for coffee.

Hop next door to Sidecar donuts and take home one of every flavor to “share.”

Backyard Bowls for lunch because we just ate 6 donuts.

Quick wine and food tour starting at Cassia & ending at La Puglia.

Or we would cancel all of those plans and go to my favorite local spot, Santa Monica Brew Works for beer and food trucks.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
No doubt that without encouragement and support from family my company wouldn’t exist. I also owe a huge thank you to my former boss, Dana. I’m leaving her last name out on purpose because she’d die! Not only is she a muse for my current designs, but I was lucky enough to work for her at her company for almost 10 years and she taught me everything I know about the industry. She’s one of the most genuinely supportive humans I’ve ever known. She has the perfect combination of confidence and calm that I would kill for, and she’s also effortlessly cool, which I’m still hoping will rub off on me someday.
