We had the good fortune of connecting with Tim Liu and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tim, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I originally went to school to become a Registered Dietitian. Realized I didn’t want to go the route of working in hospitals, I decided to become a personal trainer and use my nutrition skills to coach my clients to help them lose weight.

Eventually I was capped at the amount of clients I can see, so I switched over to online coaching instead.

It was way better for both my clients and myself, and I’m able to reach and help more people reach their fitness goals.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m an online fitness and nutrition coach and what sets me apart from others is that I help my clients not only lose the weight, but keeping it off through sustainable changes and habits.

Instead of overly strict dieting and hardcore workouts, we make it work for their lifestyle so they can stick to it long term.

I got here professionally after personal training 8-10 hours 4-5 days a week, and then transitioning to online slowly, which went full gear during the pandemic.

The transition was easy, but growing was not. Some lessons I learned was that coaching clients remotely required a different skillset, as well as learning how to create content and marketing myself.

I want the world to know that fitness isn’t unachievable based on what they see on social media and that I can help them reach their goals realistically.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Given that I grew up here in LA, I do know my way around the city and all the hot spots.

If I had a friend staying with me for a whole week, this is what I would do:

Monday: Visit Santa Monica/Venice. Go to Abbot Kinney, hang out at the beach, then dinner at Cassia or Pasjoli.

Tuesday: Hike up Griffith Park and then eat at a Thai spot in Thai Town (Jitlada, Ruen Pair)

Wednesday: Spend a day at LACMA and the Petersen Automotive Museum, then do a quick lap at the La Brea Tar Pits just to do it. Then off to Republique for dinner.

Thursday: Go to the Huntington Library in Pasadena then go to Old Town and eat at Union.

Friday; Hang out in Beverly Hills, go to Rodeo and then Century City Mall to do a little shopping.

Saturday; Drive up the PCH to Malibu. Then spend time at Zuma, Paradise Cove, or El Matador.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I think that my mom deserves a little credit and recogniti0n. She was the catalyst for me to start my career in the first place.

She had stomach cancer when I was a child, and at the time I was overweight. After she passed, I knew there was a link between what you ate and how healthy you were.

It inspired me to get in shape during the latter years of high school and then ultimately pursuing health and wellness going into college.
