We had the good fortune of connecting with Tim Tolka and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tim, other than deciding to work for yourself, what else do you think played a pivotal role in your story?
I knew I wanted to be a writer when I was a teenager but I visited almost 40 countries and worked in various industries in NY, SF, and DC, before taking my writing full-time. Those years of travel and entrepreneurship now provide a wealth of material that percolates into my writing.
What should our readers know about your business?
I’m a screenwriter, editor, and novelist hailing from the Midwest and the Deep South. I write true crime stories with unlikely detectives and thrillers about iconoclasts who face backlash for doing the right thing. I believe that writers must have an open passport and use empathy and research to achieve authenticity. That’s my M.O. When I was a kid, I was always accused of being sensitive and philosophical, but now those are huge assets.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I like to take them to the Boiling Crab, a cajun joint in Korea Town where you get a plastic bib with your meal. Or perhaps, I’d suggest that we keep it real with some Pakistani at the Al Watan Halal Tandoori Restaurant in Hawthorne. At night, my friends often find themselves at Zebulon.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Roadmap Writers has helped me. So has Film Courage. And Ken Atchity, another writer, who told me “You know what you’re doing, as a writer.”
