We had the good fortune of connecting with Timmery Turner and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Timmery, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I love love love the topic of “Risk”. Many great and successful people have said that, “Without risk there is no reward”, and I fully believe this to be true. Every success in my life and in business came from throwing caution to the wind and jumping in feet first with the belief that there would be a safety net to catch me, and there always was.

The beautiful thing about taking big risks is there is always something to be learned from the experience. You may not have acquired the desired outcome, but you will always gain growth & knowledge, which will become an integral part of your journey and act as the stepping stones to your ultimate success.

You risk it all to have it all.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Most recently I was described by a friend as “Lisa Frank eating pixie sticks on acid!”, and I kind of fell in love with that description and have been using it as a tag line ever since. However, I am SO MUCH more than that.

I was born an artist. It’s in my genetics. I sometimes feel as though my ancestors sprinkled all of their magic and creativity they each individually carried into me as a blessing. My mere existence is a testament to everyone who came before me was and still as. My creativity comes from a place that is natural and easy. It’s never forced. It’s colorful, it’s vibrant, it’s whimsical, it lifts the spirits.

I always like to say that my brand of magic is inspiring through color, positivity, activism, & empowerment in the form of art & children’s literature.

I started my professional creative career off in the fashion industry. I graduated from FIDM with a degree in Fashion Design. I got a job at an apparel manufacturing company immediately after graduation. This is where I learned that I hated working for others, and so my journey as a Creative Entrepreneur began!

There’s no rule book for being an artist in business. It’s never easy, but the universe (God) who ever you want to call it, always puts the right people into your life who help you along the way. I’ve always had a lot of magic surrounding everything I do. The key to success is to keep going. No matter what. Take the perceived fails as lessons and move on. You begin to realize that’s part of the journey, and it’s impossible to get to where you want to go without them. That’s when you begin to respect the journey more and become grateful and thankful for the “setbacks” that aren’t truly setbacks!

It’s important to lean into where you are. Look around. Take it all in. Breathe in. Be grateful. Just create, take steps, take leaps, and watch the world around you open up in your favor. It’s beautiful.

The thing I want people to know about me and my brand? I’m no different than you. You can do all the things that I do and more if you believe it enough! Believe in your magic.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This is assuming that I am in Los Angeles. I actually live in Nashville full time, but L.A. will always be my home and my city.

I would take my bestie to the Melrose Trading Post on a Sunday to take in all of the creativity of the artisans there, and to support their businesses! I love supporting other artists and creators. I think it’s an important part of the karmic journey as an artist.

We would definitely go to Venice Beach and spend the day long boarding and maybe catch a drum circle, so we can get all weird with the locals.

If there was a Pancakes and Booze Art Show happening I would 100% take my bestie there. I feel like that show kind of birthed me in a sense. It feels like home, and has one of the best vibes in the city.

Those are my top 3 things I would make sure we would do!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Wow! This is big question. I have been fortunate enough to have a lot of cheerleaders, supporters, mentors, & guardian angels along my journey. All of which I’m forever grateful to. I’ve always felt supported in some way or another. Today I’m going to give a shoutout and mad love and respect to my original Sugar Crew. They’ll know who they are. They’ve been by side rooting me on and supporting my visions for over a decade now! Of course my mama, sister Lila, and cousin Lerie Turner. And lastly, but never least…..my dad, Arthur Turner, who died last year in 2020. He left me with the greatest gift of belief in my vision by whispering words of support and encouragement during his last days. It’s they best and most important gift he could’ve given me. His words stay with me when I feel discouraged. It’s his words that keep me going and give me the strength of knowing that I was meant for greatness!
