We had the good fortune of connecting with TJ Simon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi TJ, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?

I was born and raised in the bold city of Jacksonville, FL where I began my professional music career in 2015. Earning my first national placement with R. City on their debut album “What Dreams Are Made Of” which featured Adam Levine and production from Jevon Hill and Dr. Luke. I received a BMI Music Award with co-production credits on Tye Tribett’s hit single “Work It Out.” I accredit my musical ambitions to my grandmother Johnnie Mae Evans who helped cultivate a foundation for my musical aspirations. As a kid my grandmother helped establish a firm musical and spiritual foundation. As little boy my grandmother allowed me to play the drums in their traveling gospel quartet group. I remember being on the road at the age of 12, traveling states away, having to do my homework in the back of the van or bus. That up bringing gave me foundation and allowed me to cultivate my musical gifts at an early age.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?

At an early age, I was always engulfed in how the process of music works and architectural design. I’ve always considered myself a presence in the back ground — always interested in the process of things and building something that’ll last beyond my years. Both music and construction allows you to do both.

I truly have two careers. One being a professional music producer and my other as the Vice President of 1st Impressions Contractors. Which is a mid sized general contracting firm consisting of 60 employees.

It was and is often a challenge to juggle both as well as have a solid work life balance. Having discipline and the mentality to create consistent structure allows me to be active with both. As well as, manage and overcome obstacles thrown my way..

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

I now reside in Houston and it’s a major city so no need to dive into the ins and outs there.

As far as Jacksonville goes, it’s a very beautiful and special place. I’m an avid fisherman so boating and fishing will probably be the first thing I’d suggest to do. One of my favorite areas in Jax to hang out and eat, is the Avondale area. There’s a lot of historic restaurants there and the neighborhoods are beautiful. The most fun thing to do is to party with live music by the MVP Band or catch a Jaguars game. If you happen to be in the city during the summer, you might be able to catch Lil Duval Day or Reb’s Block Party. The city is still growing and expanding but we are close to some of the coolest beaches. Who wouldn’t love that!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?

Author Steven Scott said it best. “Best people aren’t driven by money or power, they are driven by purpose and a desire to improve the lives of others”

It’s a must I dedicate this shout out to my family, my village. Thankful for my cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents, parents and siblings. Without the closeness of my village as a kid, I would not even be halfway where I am today. Special shout out to my wife, mom and daughter. That’s my “Why” and I’m forever grateful for them.
