We had the good fortune of connecting with Tom McCaffrey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tom, why did you pursue a creative career?
I’m an attorney by profession. That paid for raising my family over 35 years. However, I’ve always wanted to be a writer. Once my kids were grown and I had some extra time, I sat down and took a shot at writing a novel. That became my debut novel, The Wise Ass. Found a publisher, Black Rose Writing, on my first try and the rest is history. I’ve published 4 Amazon Best sellers in two years: The Wise Ass, An Alien Appeal, Kissing My Ass Goodbye and Finding Jimmy Moran, The fifth book in the series, Where The Ley Lines Meet, completes what is now called The Claire Saga. It will be published on June 27, 2024. I pursued the creative career once I was free enough to do so. I did it because I had to. I had to know if I had the goods to be a writer. Now I’m looking to option the series as a film franchise or HBO, Amazon or Netflix series. So, Hollywood, give me a call.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My novels are my art. What sets them apart is that they are written for any age and are based on my belief that there is magic in the world, if you know where to look for it. The books have been called Grisham on mushrooms, and the series is basically a genre jumping Goodfellas meets Wizard of Oz, meets Mork and Mindy, meets Yellowstone, meets Independence Day. The challenge is finding the time to write, and then getting by the gatekeepers, whose best interest is to reject as many works as possible, so they can never be wrong. The writing is easy. Getting your book out there is hard. It takes daily marketing. Everyone you meet is a potential reader. What I’ve learned is that you should never, ever, give up. Ever! My series is character rich and very visual. The reviews constantly refer to how the readers believe that The Claire Saga would make a great film series.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my friends were visiting LA, I would take them to Venice Beach and then Beverly Hills, troll the Pacific Palisades, and the Hollywood Hills. I’m a vegetarian, so I would probably take them to Horses, but maybe also hit the Pig & Whistle, the Clark Street Diner and maybe Musso & Frank Grill.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shout out is to Dr. Steven Greer, who I believe is a visionary, and his organization, The Disclosure Project.
