We had the good fortune of connecting with Natalie Garcia and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Natalie, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
My work life balance has not always been a priority to me especially in my 20’s. Back then I was more focused on developing my career and working hard to create a successful path for myself. I was constantly working and never taking breaks because that is how I was raise. My mentality was if I don’t work constantly, I won’t be successful. However, as I’ve grown in my career, I have realized how important work life balance is not just for your health, but for your creative mindset. I had several moments in my career where I found myself completely burnt out and not able to be as creative as I wanted to be due to exhaustion. This is where I realized my life can’t be all work! I had to learn to rest and take time for myself. That’s how I developed my poetry book, it’s focused on self-care and my healing journey to finding balance and peace within. I also encourage others to write and find time for themselves.

Work life balance looks different for everyone and there are no set rules on how to stay balanced.
Everyone has there own way maintain a work life balance and it’s just learning to listen to yourself. For me, balance is saying yes to myself and taking the time to focus on my own needs first. Sometimes all we need to do is prioritize ourselves, buy it’s not an easy task. That’s why writing poetry is so important for me because it allows me to express my emotions and listen to my needs. Writing daily is something I have incorporated in my daily routine because it helps me maintain balance. Living in the present moment is also another way I stay balanced. It can be as easy as breathing in and out.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am an author, spoken-word poet and a creative director. My writing focuses on self-love, healing, and spiritual practices. My first book “Cósmica” is a collection of Spanglish poems, mantras, and magical self-care rituals. It was published in the fall of 2021 by Alegria Publishing. Currently, I am pursuing my Ph.D. in Positive Psychology to help normalize therapy, brujeria, and trauma healing in the BIPOC community. I am strong believer that when you truly listen to yourself and honor yourself it can easily manifest itself.. I got where I am today because I picked myself up after falling many times. I allowed myself to make mistakes along the way and I learned so much from that. It hasn’t been easy, but it has definitely been very rewarding. Now, more than ever I am more driven to accomplish all my goals without the fear of making mistakes holding me back. When you allow yourself to make mistakes and learn every step of the way there’s sense of bravery that pushes you to keep going. My story and my brand focus on acceptance and not perfection. Everyone’s journey is different and it’s ever evolving!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I was born and raised in LA! I have a lot of regular hangout spots, but one of my favorite spots in LA is Nativo on York Blvd in Highland Park! The food and drinks are amazing, the ambience is perfect, it really captures the Mexican culture and they always have incense burning too!

I also love brunch at Dialog Cafe in West Hollywood and it’s right next to one of my favorite book shops, Book Soup. There’s so many places I love and I feel so lucky to live in a city like LA!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to shout out my mentor, Davina Ferreira, Alegria Publishing, my wonderful poetry community, and my friends who have supported me on this amazing journey!
