We had the good fortune of connecting with Tomide Bamigboye and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tomide, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I am an avid daydreamer. I am unsure if that is a good trait, but oh well. I always make up scenarios in my head, I come up with all these ideas and feel obligated to bring them to life. I have also been obsessed with watching films and fascinated by how they are made. Growing up, my favourite subject was literature and I always dreamt of turning the stories I read into films while still developing my original film ideas.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I aim to spread awareness about social issues, mental illness and neuro-diversity through films. Some of my films have touched on topics like autism, mental illness, child marriage, etc. My short film “The Spectrum of You” is currently on its festival route. It is about an Autistic young adult and his support worker navigating life together and learning a lot from each other while overcoming obstacles.

Before diving into filmmaking full-time, I was a counsellor at a mental health organization in Canada. This opportunity, which I am forever grateful for, made me see the world through a different lens. I have had clients from different social and economic parts of the world. Through this experience, I gained the wisdom to deal with severe issues in my film in the right and respectful way.

I started making films as a teenager with zero knowledge. I had a lot to say but did not know how to. I then decided to get better by pursuing a Master’s degree in Filmmaking. This has helped me tremendously, gradually I am beginning to achieve my goals and make the kinds of film I have always wanted to make.

Through this journey, I have learnt that it is never easy pursuing your goals and there are people who will try to discourage you. But, if you know what you want and more importantly, if you know what you are destined to do, nothing and no one can stop you. Through determination, perseverance, and hard work, your goals can be accomplished.

My films have been accepted at multiple film festivals and I have won a couple of awards in both USA and internationally.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
First of all, we need to grab some pastries from Porto’s and then head to the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. Spend some time at six flags and then head to West Hollywood for a fun night. There is never a dull moment at Santa Monica Boulevard.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My parents, siblings, Prince Mensah, Idorenyen Uko, Apoorva Choudhary, and Sara Eustaquio
