We had the good fortune of connecting with Trevor Boggs and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Trevor, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
In the music industry, you have to be very social. I think a lot of people, especially musicians that are just starting out, don’t think about that side of the work we do as much but it’s arguably one of the most important skills to possess as musician. It took a while for me to get used to (I’m still getting used to it) as I spent most of my early life locked in my room practicing and not doing much else, but learning how to be less extroverted has led to way more opportunities that I never would have been exposed to had I not got my butt out of my practice room to meet other musicians!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a “gun-for-hire” guitarist, which means I am pretty much on-call to play gigs and provide guitar in recording sessions whenever someone in my network needs my services. I think what sets me apart is my ability to adapt to just about any genre I am asked to play. I spent a lot of time during my studies at Musicians Institute and Berklee learning the ins-and-outs of as many genres as possible. It wasn’t easy at all. I spent a lot of time alone in a practice room instead of going out with friends and partying to get to where I am today.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I think I would first take them over to Musicians Institute to show them where I spent most of my nights in college. Then I’d take them to Leo’s Taco truck in Hollywood for some the best tacos in the city or Cho Oishi in Hollywood for Sushi. I’d also want to show them the Griffith Observatory, The Grove, the Santa Monica Pier, Beverly Hills and maybe the Warner bros studios! After that, I’d take them to Bossa Nova for dinner. Then we’d have a drink and shoot some pool at the Brickyard pub on Wilcox in Hollywood, and finish the night with a drink at Jameson’s on Hollywood boulevard.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’m so fortunate to have a lot of people in my life who support me, encourage me, and push me to do better in my career. My family, while I feel they get understandably a little scared for me sometimes, have always encouraged me to follow my passion. My private instructors from both Berklee College of Music and Musicians Institute – namely Bruce Bartlett, Dan Gilbert, Dean Brown, Josh Workman, and Ken Rosser – brought me from being a self-taught guitar player who didn’t know what a major 3rd was to where I am today as a professional guitarist with the ability to play in almost any genre and I’m so honored to have had the opportunity to study with them. I want to give a special shoutout to Dan Gilbert and Dean Brown. Dean, who is no longer with us, was one of the nicest guys I’ve met and always took an interest in the music that I was writing and the bands I was in at a time when I was burnt out from playing guitar. He always found a way to bring me back and enjoy playing when it had started feeling like “just a job.” Dan Gilbert made me the guitarist I am today. The way he teaches makes hard concepts easy to understand and he was very encouraging while also not allowing me to stray from the standards he set. He pushed me to be better, and I got way better.

I also want to give shoutouts to all of my close friends… for everything! Thanks to Zion and Blanco for being there for me through some tough times and giving me encouragement about my career while helping me push myself to be better. Thanks to the guys in Hambone Relay for giving me my first paying gigs in LA! Thanks to Josh Gomez and the rest of his band for giving me constant laughs and encouragement and making music so much fun to play.

Most of all I want to thank my girlfriend, Shreya, who supports me, loves me, and pushes me to be better every day. I don’t think I could be who I am without her. I love you, Shreya!
