We had the good fortune of connecting with Trey Lucas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Trey, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind the success of my brand is really leaning on the reason WHY I started. Motiv8 The Culture is more than just an athletic brand. It is a lifestyle rooted in the experience of the football STUDENT-athlete. Motiv8 The Culture is defining what it means to truly be a STUDENT-athlete. Our goal as a brand is to create a CULTURE of athletes who believe academics are just as important as making plays on the field. We achieve this goal with our overall message and engaging events ranging from college tours, conferences, panelist discussions, business attire clothing drives, and much more.
We all know creating a brand isn’t easy so your WHY has to be strong in order to see it through those rough patches. I understand that if I’m able to bring alive the full vision I have for my brand, I will be helping countless young men like me better themselves and their opportunities in life!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My professional career is in Tech Sales, I’m most proud about breaking into the tech industry as a young black man. Being a representation for other young black men who are looking to break into the tech industry is a role I don’t take lightly. For those reasons I put my best foot forward and show up every day to put in the work to show there is space in the tech industry for us to thrive and lead successful careers.
It’s also important to show the young student-athletes who follow my brand that there is life outside the game of football. It helps them see the opportunities they will have once they finish college whether it’s the NFL or the corporate world.
Along the way I’ve learned anything worth having will not come easy, I found myself in a lot of uncomfortable situations but it made me a better person in the end.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Durham has a laid-back but ready-for-what’s-next vibe. I’m a very laid-back individual and my best friends could attest to that. I wouldn’t have much of an itinerary but I could list out some places I would love to take them if the vibe is right.
1. Duke Blue Devils Basketball Game
2. Dames Chicken & Waffles
3. Nantucket Grill (They have the best strawberry shortcake)
4. Durham Bulls Baseball Game
5. Unscripted Hotel Rooftop Bar
6. Southpoint Mall
7. Sarah P. Duke Gardens
8. American Tobacco Campus
9. Durham Performace Arts Center to catch a broadway show
10. Tasty Stop Wings
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My entire immediate family Mom, Dad, and Sister played a major supportive role in me being where I am now. In high school, I told my parents don’t worry about paying for my college tuition because I would earn an athletic scholarship and go to school for free. At that very moment, they began to hold me accountable for everything I did to make sure it aligned with my goals to make that promise come true. Without their guidance and support, that goal may have never been realized.
Seeing as my brand is rooted in my experience as a student-athlete and the journey it takes to get there, and where it can take you in life, without them there would be no Motiv8 The Culture.
