We had the good fortune of connecting with Troy Doherty and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Troy, how do you think about risk?
Risks are necessary; they are what push me beyond my comfort zone and into a realm of the unknown. Every wonderful moment in my life has been granted by taking a risk, whether that involves choosing the arts over sports, relocating to a new city to pursue my career, or even expressing my feelings to someone I deeply care for.
My acting teacher always used to say, “What’s the biggest risk? Sometimes, the biggest risk isn’t in running, but in standing your ground.” Throughout my life, this is something that has always stayed with me. When you risk everything, you are choosing to place your trust in something greater than yourself. And yes, at times, the outcome may not align with your intentions, but that’s what makes a better story.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My relationship with art has been a journey, with its ups and downs. But just like any great relationship, it takes work – consistent work. It’s about showing up not only for yourself but also for the ideas that come to you. Those ideas are alive and eager to be heard. As the storyteller, it’s my responsibility to become their voice, to transform those ideas from mere concepts into something more profound.
I take immense pride in the accomplishments I’ve achieved in my life. From my role as John Smiley on “This Is Us” to the fact that my song “Foolish” has garnered over 2 million streams on Spotify. It’s astonishing to realize that these achievements unfolded within just a few years of each other.
A significant portion of my gratitude stems from the challenges I’ve encountered. I entered the entertainment industry at the age of 11, and as you might imagine, I faced a substantial amount of rejection. It was essentially ingrained in me since childhood. However, the ability to channel those hardships and shape them into something that fuels creativity has been a true blessing. It’s this very process that has driven me to continue thriving.
I aspire for the world to see me for who I am, beyond the perceptions others may hold. I long for my songs and my art to create a sense of familiarity, as if you truly know me. I want them to feel as if we’re old friends who haven’t talked in a while.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The best time ever? Well, if it’s with my best friend, honestly, just playing Super Smash Bros and laughing would make it the best week.
But if we could go anywhere? I would choose a place neither of us has been to before. This way, we can experience its unique characteristics, create inside jokes, and explore the surroundings together. I’ve always had a fondness for cruises. Yes, I’m a cruise guy. The beauty of the open ocean combined with participating in a belly flop contest brings me an incredible amount of joy.
I recently returned from the UK, and I’m looking forward to revisiting Scotland. Not only is it breathtakingly beautiful, but the people there also have a fantastic sense of humor. Plus, I’d have the opportunity to spend time with some family, making it a win-win situation.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I thank God for giving me gifts that took me years to recognize. Without that relationship, my life would be very different. Additionally, my parents – hands down, without them, I wouldn’t even exist. Literally. But in all seriousness, I couldn’t have asked for more supportive parents. They believe in me more than I can comprehend, and it’s the same for everyone in my family. The Doherty klan is undeniably strong!
Another person who has always been a beautiful mentor to me is my voice teacher, Vincent Covello. Not only is he extraordinarily talented in his field, but he has also provided me with guidance along my journey more than he realizes.
I want to give a shoutout to Paulo Coelho, the author of “The Alchemist.” That book transformed my perspective on life and how it can unfold. I also appreciate Joe Dispenza for creating the most intriguing and effective meditations.
And finally, Chipotle. I’m there so much I’m surprised they don’t charge me rent.
