We had the good fortune of connecting with Tyra Chantel Sparks and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tyra Chantel, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?

Failure isn’t failure; it’s an identifier. Before actually putting in the work to have my own business, I thought failure was the end all, be all- and embarrassing. Now, I’m realizing all failure is doing is pointing out the ‘flaw’ in our idea and letting us know where we need to improve. I fail so much that I often don’t even get frustrated anymore, because I’m using these little identifiers as clues to get to my goal.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The work I do is art and design. I’m an illustrator, painter, logo designer, an all around artist. From my skateboard deck paintings, to my book illustrations, you can’t get away from a message. Every piece of art that I create tells a story both blatant and subliminal. I can’t help but to be proud that I’m able to stick to my morals, values and simply myself with every piece created and that’s how I’m able to tell the story. Because it’s not just art to me. It’s life experiences. It’s my raw truth.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
First, we’re visiting any art museum we can find! Then, we’re finding food. Hot and Cool Cafe, Planchas Tacos, Chicken Day, and Dog Haus. We have to hit up the beach, it’s a little out the way but you can’t beat any beach along the PCH. Drinks at Father’s Office and South Central Cafe! But most of all, the hikes- there’s nothing like hiking in LA. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Wow, a shoutout?! There’s so many! But this one goes to the people around me and the people I meet along the way. Nothing inspires me to keep going, keep getting better, and keep pushing to the next level like my family, friends, even other artists and acquaintances. Whether it’s love, support, criticism, or simply reassurance, PEOPLE remind me that my journey is important. (And they will go insane if I don’t say this, so my mom, sister, and closest friends are at the top of that list). Haha
