We had the good fortune of connecting with Tyrone Webster and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tyrone, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
I have been playing in bands and writing music since junior high. At the beginning I never really expected to make any money from playing, I rarely thought about it and at the time it wasn’t important. My first job was a dishwashing gig in a family restaurant in my home town, I was 15 years old. Ever since then Ive been working my way up in the restaurant industry just trying to make rent and continue my passion for music whether it be buying gear or funding a tour. Ive always had to balance the two, music and work, and when I was in my early 20’s my focus was always my band. Over time my drive in the restaurant industry as well as my passion for creating music have remained the same, and with now starting a family, I would say the balance isn’t necessarily changing, but evolving may be a better word. This is how I think about the balance.

In the past few years I had began to really take care of my mental health, and look inward for what I truly wanted for myself. It’s definitely an ongoing process, but a necessary one. In doing so I have been able to cultivate a career that allows me to not only continue creating music, but also to start a family as well. I believe the changes in balance are the sacrifices my wife and I make to ensure we create a good home for our family, as well as allowing each other to pursue our passions, take risks, and create the life we want.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
After playing in multiple bands, the latest one for nearly a decade, I began creating audio tracks for myself to listen to while meditating. As I was creating these tracks I got to a point where my songwriting mind was kicking in and I decided to make full on songs. What I came up with ended up being a mixture of folk and electronic music. Ive always been interested in music that has a “wall of sound” to it and texture became one of my main focuses when it came to creating music. The result of this experiment was my first album I created on my own, it was called “INTENTION”. It’s something I am incredibly proud of and a goal of mine would be to perform it in its entirety one day. The easy part was creating the album. I don’t think I have had a recording experience like it before. I was alone with minimal equipment, and in that it was necessary to keep things simple. There was no anxiety and the music flowed. The hard part for me is always promotion. It’s not something I’m good at and I still struggle with it. I am fortunate to have the people I do that support and really dig my art. I am forever grateful.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I recently moved outside of the city of Austin Texas. Its a booming city that is growing so fast that where im currently living outside of the city will soon be lined with condos and strip malls. That being said there’s still plenty of fun to be had it just may take a little bit longer to get there. My wife and I regularly hit up a little neighborhood located off a road called North Loop. There we can grab morning coffee at Epoch coffee and check out my favorite record shop in town called Breakaway Records. If you are into vintage clothing we can pop in next door to take a peak at a shop called Blue Velvet. Just down the road if you’re in the mood for a beer on a patio we can stop at Workhorse bar! There are plenty of restaurants to check out as well as food trucks. If anyone comes to visit me, they will be eating, a lot. Along with eating, it is good to have physical activity. Swimming at Barton Springs is always a go to for those warm summer days and nights.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My wife Noelle is my number one. I am incredibly grateful for her endless support and love. My good friend and bandmate Darryl Shaw-Rockley was a huge influence on me. He really brought me out of my shell as a songwriter and a performer. He taught and gave me so much, it truly means everything to me. Finally, anyone I have been involved with musically has left a huge mark on me. The talent, the love, the kindness, and the fun times I have been so lucky to come across in this life are incredible. All of you, thank you.
