We had the good fortune of connecting with Vanessa Sigillo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Vanessa, what role has risk played in your life or career?
It’s the things in life that scare you and pull you out of your comfort zone that give you the feeling of being alive.
Since the day I decided to fully commit to my art and my passion, I went hand in hand with risk. What if it doesn’t work out, what if I put it all on the line, what if there is no going back.
But these were the questions I took as my motivation.
When the offer came to work in Los Angeles, the level of risk increased again. Leaving Europe, my friends and family, for an unknown country, a new challenge, a new chance and a whole new perspective.
Again I put everything on one card, again I went hand in hand with the risk and two suitcases on the plane to Los Angeles to rediscover myself.
Risk inspires me, I have always been afraid to live an average life. That’s why I decided to become a tattoo artist, that’s why I decided to leave Switzerland and work in Los Angeles. That’s why I decided to always follow my heart and passion and therefore the risk.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a tattoo artist, I am specialised in fine detailed and uniquely designed tattoos. In my opinion, tattoos are a mirror of the soul, they speak their own language and I have made it my mission to transform this message from my clients into art that they wear on their bodies like jewelry. I have a very unique eye for aesthetics and placement of my designs, they should not only be perfect for my customers but also perfectly match the flow of their body. This sensitivity for people and the talent to transform the visions, wishes and ideas into images, is what sets me apart from other artists.
I create designs and compositions completely tailored to my clients, which, as I said before, are a mirror of their soul.
Take them on a journey.
But to get there, the road was not always easy. Finding your way artistically, developing your own style and making your own way is much harder than you would imagine. First you have to learn how the craft works, understand the art, understand yourself and only then, and this is the hardest part, you have to try to forget everything to make your own version out of it.
Every beginning is hard, especially when your hands can’t yet do what your head wants. So this journey has not been easy at all. But every challenge, every sleepless night, every tear and despair was worth it. And I would do everything exactly the same way again.
I want to share my experiences, my Italian passion and Swiss precision, in Los Angeles, in the world in the form of art. I want to give people something to take with them on their journey, because a tattoo is much more than just art, it’s a life choice, an enrichment.
I want the world to receive this message, I hope to pick up many out there with my story and motivate them to go their way. To be guided by passion.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Places I’ve already been to and would definitely show my best friend are: Manhattan, Malibu and Venice Beach
the Getty Villa and of course the Getty Museum
I would take her for a hike in the Hollywood Hills to look at the beautiful view over the city and sunset.
Would definitely have brunch with her at Blu Jam and eat breakfast burritos (I discovered them in LA – I’m in love).
Would most definitely take her on a trip to Universalstudios as well (am still a tourist).
Dinner for sure at Bestia restaurant and sushi at Kodo.
A delicious coffee at Maru coffee.
A relaxing walk through the Arts District, of course, may not be missing.
Much more I have also unfortunately not yet seen, but still have a long list to work off.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My family has always motivated and supported me, even when I had the craziest ideas, they always found a way to back me up. That’s how I had the courage to follow my heart in the first place. Through my passion, I also met my love Yanik, I guess one could say that art has brought us together. I was still at the very beginning of my career when we met and the big steps forward and the knowledge I’ve gained is definitely thanks to him. And not to forget Noah Minuskin, who opened the doors to his studio in Los Angeles for me and not only that, he also let me dive into a whole new world of art. Working side by side with him and learning from his immense knowledge is everything an aspiring artist could ask for. I could not be in better hands.
So big thanks to my family,
My love,
And my mentor Noah
