We had the good fortune of connecting with Vei Rusli and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Vei, other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?
I decided to put myself in other people’s shoes when it comes to designing. It is one of the things I’ve learned from my college time at ArtCenter. In each class, we are invited to answer some questions, “Who are we designing this for?”, “How is this design going to influence someone’s life?”. It becomes a habit to ask myself these kinds of questions and think of my client separately from the audience. The answers to these questions become the anchor of my design concepts. There may be setbacks and challenges encountered along the way, but it gives us that glimpse of light at the end of the tunnel when we empathize. It’s never easy to overcome a creative block, and sometimes reaching out to others for feedback goes a long way.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Growing up I always knew that I would love to be in the arts/design industry. What sets me apart is my love for nature and adventure. My hope through my design is to preserve the beauty of nature for the next generations ahead to appreciate and maintain the habitats of wildlife animals. I’m most excited about my sustainability-oriented clients who dedicate their brands to the better future of the Earth.

It’s not easy to always come up with some brilliant solution for sustainable design. I’ve learned that the key to a successful sustainable design strategy is the perfect combination of research and creative problem-solving. My bookshelf has the answer to my creative blocks. Books about design, sustainability, and business help me conceptualize my design concepts.

My goal is to make a sustainable lifestyle accessible to everyone.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m a huge fan of nature, so definitely will take them hiking to Switzer Falls and then do a coffee run at Highland Park. Go visit the Rose Bowl Flea Market on the weekend and find hidden treasures there. Nothing can beat thrifting in LA! I will definitely take my best friend to one of the art museums in LA. The beach is also on top of the list, I will drive to Malibu for less crowded beaches. And lastly, I will take them to Erewhon for fancy grocery shopping and potential celebrity sightings. There are so many things I would love to recommend in LA, it is probably best to ask me in person!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I wouldn’t be here without my dear friend, my inspiration, and partner-in-crime Levina Lasmana, who has shared this journey with me since day one. Thank you for always giving me honest feedback and saying something nice when I need it. I would like to also thank Rhema Gabriela for being such a great mentor in the professional world, you’ve provided me with a perfect place to grow in the workplace.

And lastly, I would love to thank my family, friends, and instructors for their endless encouragement and support.
