We had the good fortune of connecting with Victoria Brodsky and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Victoria, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Growing up, I suffered from disordered eating and had a horrible relationship with food. What made it worse was that the marketing around food made “eating right” confusing – what was healthy? Was juice healthy? Was fat-free cake healthy? The food industry seemed to be tricking consumers into eating crappy food via clever marketing, and I’ve always been passionate about changing that. I thought – if they can do that, can’t I do the same thing with a very healthy product that promotes healthy habits? The idea for DrinkLyte came to me when I noticed my friends using Pedialyte (a pediatric medicine) to rehydrate after a night out. Pedialyte is effective because it’s not just electrolytes – it’s a specific medical formula. Since drinking two beers can be just as dehydrating as an hour-long workout I thought – why can’t I order something like this at a bar? So I took the effective formula of Pedialyte (made with good-for-you ingredients) and branded it for nightlife. With cool branding and a formula that helps reduce hangovers, we’re effectively “tricking” consumers into a healthy habit that promotes a balanced lifestyle.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
DrinkLyte aims to do to nightlife what Gatorade did to the sports industry. We’re making it normal to rehydrate properly after drinking – as it should be! What is unique about us is that we follow the WHO’s recommended formula for rehydration; it’s called an “oral rehydration solution” and it’s the next best thing to an IV. Our competitors add more sugar or extra ingredients that may negatively impact the drink’s effectiveness. We have a minimal amount of sugar (just enough for the drink to be effective), and our flavors, colors, and sweeteners are all-natural. Also, you’ll never see a Gatorade or Pedialyte at a bar – it just doesn’t work. DrinkLyte is branded specifically for the 21+ crowd. Our business was heavily impacted by COVID, because we are a B2B company for nightlife venues and events. So when COVID hit, we had to pivot to eCommerce and make drink mixes available because shipping cans was too expensive. We look forward to bringing back the cans soon! What we want the world to know about DrinkLyte is that it’s not just a hangover product, it’s a health product. It’s just a happy side effect that it helps with hangovers. But what it’s really doing is rehydrating your body – improving skin, hair, immunity, and overall health. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I recently started my MBA at UCLA Anderson School of Management. The staff, my fellow students, the Price Center, Startup UCLA, the Wolfen Family, alumni, Leadership@Anderson, ELDP, and Entrepreneurship Association all have provided me with more love and support than I’ve had before. I’m so grateful for my Ander-fam and all of the programs that support their student entrepreneurs.
