We had the good fortune of connecting with Victoria Horochowski and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Victoria, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Taking a risk can be scary and stressful but I always remind myself that if you want something you’ve never had then you have to do something you’ve never done. This is something that can be difficult if you are cozy in your comfort zone like I was about 5 years ago. I was working at a great commission based salon with a fun group of stylists. I had been there for about 13 years, and I was one of the senior stylists at that point. I loved my management and I had a lot of freedom there, but I was still working under someone else’s rules and schedule. I’ve always thought about what it would be like to work for myself, set my own hours, book my days as I see fit… but I was just so comfortable there! Then, covid hit and everything changed. We were all laid off and when they opened their doors again, they were only hiring full time stylists. I’m a mom to two young kids and part time was all I was going to be able to pull off at that point so I had to think outside the box. This is when my business was born. I started sharing a private studio with a friend and working my own schedule and this intoxicating freedom of being self employed finally pulled me into what I always wanted to do; be an independent hair stylist.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is in the hair! I am a hair stylist and colorist and my passion is dimensional custom hair color for men and women. I feel like a delightfully mad scientist, mixing up color formulas and watching my creations come to life. Making people feel attractive for a living is the best service I can give to my community; Some even call me a Glamour Witch. I mix this magic with a high vibe hair care experience and true connection with my clients. I love being a supporter, friend and confidant to the people who sit in my chair and I thrive from forming friendships with them and being a fly on the wall to their life story.
Getting here was not the easiest but it was fun! I knew what I wanted to do from the first time a cut a lopsided bob on my mannequin in hair school. To this day I focus on constantly continuing my education so that I can be on top of all the new and fresh techniques and trends. The hair world is ever changing and growing and I learned that if you don’t stay ahead you will get left behind with outdated techniques and products. I would want the world to know that my story comes from hard work, passion and commitment to follow my dream to do what I love most, making people feel beautiful!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If someone was to visit Los Angeles I would focus on taking them to some incredible restaurants. I’m foodie myself so I’m always looking out for a unique dining experience. Some places I’d definitely hit (in no particular order) are: Hilo in Beverly Hills for a one of a kind Omakase experience with chef Hilo. Buy chef Hilo a shot of sake and have an intimate dinner while sharing life stories and learning about the extravagant and rare fish he has to offer! A visit to Tempura Endo in Beverly Hills will also be mandatory for a culinary adventure like no other! If my friend was vegan we would do Pura Vita in Hollywood or Crossroads off of Melrose, then swing by the Melrose Umbrella Company for a mezcal old fashioned. For French cuisine we would go to Petite Trois and for upscale Mexican we would do Mercado on 3rd. For an incredible fine dining sea food forward experience we would spend a night in Providence on Melrose. I say a night because it’s 18 courses and a true dining adventure! For a low key punch of Mexican flavor I would hit up Leo’s Taco truck on Pico. Brunch would have to be at Republique or Connie and Ted’s! Osteria Mozza is a must for some of the most insane pasta dishes you’ve ever had Road to Seoul is one of the funnest Korean bbq spots! Tatsu Ramen on Melrose would be the stop for; you guessed it: ramen! Some of the best spicy Tonkotsu broth ever. An atmosphere forward dinner at Firefly in Studio City is always a win and then back for authentic Mexican and incredible margaritas at Sol Y Luna on Ventura! Last stop for some incredible hole in the wall sushi at Miho on Ventura is a must. Their fish is melt in your mouth fresh. Then, when we are so full we can’t breath, I would take my guest to Disneyland! Stay the night at the Pixar Pier hotel and do California Adventure the next day while sipping spicy Micheladas and walking off our food tour!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d love to shout out my dear friend Lark Spencer. He was the one who invited me to share his studio at Salon Republic West Hollywood and helped me find the courage to take that risk and the final step to building my own brand and business. You don’t need to see the whole staircase to start the climb, only that first step.. and then the next one after that and the next. Before you know it you’re at the top.
