We had the good fortune of connecting with Victoria Margarita and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Victoria, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
I genuinely believe in the saying, “If you can see her, you can be her”. I’ve gained so much confidence in pursuing my dreams and goals by seeing others achieve theirs. I read books, listened to podcasts, and have attended panels that discuss how others have started their businesses. What I learn from consuming this kind of content is that, what we imagine and have been told the road to success is – it’s wrong. Especially in the cannabis industry, a truly wild, wild west space, that cookie-cutter road doesn’t exist. So how do we navigate it? My idea to start the Work Sesh podcast and give women in cannabis a platform to share their trailblazing journeys, was so that other entrepreneurial stoners can feel inspired to pursue their careers in cannabis too.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Like many creatives, imposter syndrome is a huge mental block. When reaching out to guests and recording with people, I ALWAYS feel nervous. I feel silly, like what am I doing? Without fail though, when I listen to a finished episode, I am so proud and happy with the results! So whenever I’m doubting myself, I try to remember that good feeling of accomplishing an episode and remember how that uncomfy feeling is all mental and temporary.
Reaching out to people I admire makes me SICK and rejection sucks but I’ve had so many amazing women say yes that the risk is worth it. Also, if they don’t say yes this time, I keep them on a spreadsheet to reach out in a few months. Everyone’s timing doesn’t always align and you can’t take it personally.
These feelings never go away but pushing through them gets easier with consistency. You can’t get anywhere without overcoming those feelings. My success so far is all due to being scared and doing it anyway.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I have sooooo many! Since they are my best friend, they must love an artsy scene so… We’d go to ROW DTLA to check out the shops and attend the monthly Pickwick Vintage fashion show. the golden sandwich from Pikunico is a must. The top of their parking garage is hands down the best skyline view of the city, sometimes security kicks you out but they’ll let you get your picture.
A dope evening in the Arts District includes gazing at art at Hauser and Wirth, walking over to De La Nonna for pizza, then walking across the street for pinball, vintage arcade games, and drinks at EightyTwo.
True hidden gems are The Museum of Jurassic Technology in Culver City and my fav Thai spot, Sanamluang Cafe in Hollywood.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Firstly, all the people affected by the war on drugs and those whose lives have been destroyed by the criminalization of cannabis. I thank everyone involved in the fight for legalization. There is still a long way to go but we wouldn’t be here without them.
Also, my parents and family, whose love makes me fearless.
Lastly, the women who have come on the podcast so far and took a chance on a stranger tying to start a podcast. That feeling of support and community means everything!
