We had the good fortune of connecting with Vitor Matera and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Vitor, what inspires you?
I’m very inspired by the daily urban scene Los Angeles has, grafitti, fashion, music… but focused on my work my inspiration and references come from the paintings and sculptures from the renascence and baroque period. Art gallery, museums and of course what inspires me the most are the tattoo conventions, where I can trade a lot of knowledge and meet amazing artists.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve been tattooing for about 7 years and always felt like my art would fit nice in a t shirt. After this time tattooing I decide that in parallel to the tattoo I would open Ocean Ink, a clothing brand for tattoo artists and tattoo enthusiasts.
Rio de Janeiro was my hometown for 26 years before I decide to move to Los Angeles to chase my dream of be a tattoo artist and here I saw many opportunities to grow as an artist and entrepreneur.
My father always say: Doesn’t matter what career you follow but the one you choose you need to be the best one. And for myself to be the best one I would have to be between the bests in the game.
The main challenge was to learn English, that wasn’t easy for me and took probably about a a year or two so I could feel comfortable enough to make phone calls for example. But to have an idea, my first job here they kicked me out because i couldn’t really communicate myself very well.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favorite place in LA is Venice Beach. One of the least places in the world with so many different cultures interacting with each other. The energy is heavy but good at the same time.
My favorite places to eat are the Brazilian restaurants around LA but any taco truck will let any visitor very happy and assada fries are the best.
LA art district also is a good option to check art and good food.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Family over everything! I wouldn’t be here without the support I always had from everyone in my family and in special I wouldn’t be half of what I am without the support of my wife. Love you all
