We had the good fortune of connecting with Viviana Hsiao and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Viviana, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind the Palos Verdes Tutoring Company’s success is definitely our tutors’ love and dedication to helping others. Our entire staff is hand-picked each year for their academic expertise, tutoring experience, and passion for helping others. Our philosophy is to ensure that each student not only achieves their immediate academic goals but also develops the capability to approach future challenges independently. As students themselves, our tutors can uniquely relate to the obstacles of South Bay elementary, middle, and high school students.

Especially during the pandemic, our tutors have persevered and found ways to connect with other students. The pandemic has just demonstrated how devoted our tutors are to helping others succeed.

The Palos Verdes Tutoring Company would be nothing without its tutors, and we are devoted to helping students build the confidence and grow their skill set in order to succeed now and for the rest of their lives.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?

The PV Tutoring Company was founded in 2016 by two seniors and has since been handed off every year at graduation, to two students moving up to the next senior class. The tutors of PV Tutoring Company work with elementary, middle, and high schoolers in the South Bay area to help them achieve academic success. This year, I interviewed to become Co-CEO and got the position. As Co-CEO, I communicate with clients and tutors to set up sessions, update the website, contact schools to advertise the company, keep track of all the funds, set up ads online, and manage the social media accounts.

I think what sets PV Tutors apart from the rest is that the company is completely student-run, and it changes CEOs every year, so there are always new ideas to improve the company. Although the company is student-run, it is incredibly organized and professional. I’m most excited to continue to further our reach in the community and help more students, even if they do not live within the South Bay.

I am beyond proud to be able to say that I led this remarkable group of student-tutors.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Palos Verdes is one of the most beautiful places in California, with its breathtaking views. So I’d first take them to enjoy the ocean view at Terranea! There, we’d walk along the trails and grab a pastry at Sea Beans. The next day, we would go bike riding along the beach, then have dinner at Rockefeller. I’d also take them on a picnic at the PV cliffs during sunset. But besides nature, there’s a bunch of other exciting things to do in PV! We’d go ice skating at the Promenade, shopping at Del Amo, or bowling at Gable House!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d love to give a shoutout to my friend Richard Criley. He was a part of the PV Tutoring Company last year, and he is always happy to help or answer any questions that I might have. I am so grateful for all the advice he has given me on how to handle the company.
