Meet Voba

We had the good fortune of connecting with Voba and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Voba, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
I’ll give you two:
1.
Attaining a healthy, full voice that spans at least 3 octaves of legitimate, easy vocal pull has an amazing impact on multiple aspects of your personality development, such as how you deal with emotions, how much space you allow yourself to take up, as well as how intuitively you dare to make decisions.
2.
The more gentle you build your voice, the greater and more powerful it is going to be. Strong and massive Voices are not born out of strain, push and struggle, they are born out of self-care, self-love and Patience&Persistence.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am Voba,
After 8 years of Ballet School and another 7 Years of Vocal-Education, I toured with an A Capella Band for several years. In that band, I developed my singing, as well as my music-arranging skills tremendously.
My transition from being a professional dancer (The Lion King Hamburg & Paris) to becoming a singer was anything but easy. When you try to develop yourself, when you try to change what you sound like (and thereby your artistic identity), you receive a lot of back lash from the peers around you who liked who you were before. For any artist it is an important piece of the puzzle to success to figure out how to withstand devastating criticism, harsh words and even ill will and regardless soar above what you yourself, as well as others thought possible for you to achieve.
My approach of dealing with all sorts of emotions is the following type of embodiment: Feeling emotions as physical sensations and practicing to stay calm with whatever storm might rage in your body at any given time. That is a concept taught in Vipassana Meditation and applied to singing, vocal-, as well as self-development, it can move mountains. And it can really help you feel home within your body all the time.
When thinking about singing, most people think in boxes of modern singing vs classical singing. I do not subscribe to this view. Your voice is a series of muscles that work in tandem to produce sound. This definition means that it becomes irrelevant what you use your voice for. All that matters is that you are healthy and as flexible as possible with your voice.
I am now traveling the world, living where ever I want to at the time, making music and teaching people how to develop the most amazing voices they can dream of having in a gentle and sustainable manner.
I want all the singers out there to know that there are gentle ways for you to get to where you want to go vocally. If teachers tell you things like “sing through the pain”, “don’t mind feeling slightly uncomfortable”, or “just give it some more push”, you don’t need to believe that, you don’t need to stick with them. You can understand your anatomy and gently nudge your body to where you want your voice to grow to and it will exceed your expectations.
And that’s my gift to the vocal-world:

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Santa Monica Pier is definitely one of the greatest places to witness a sun down.
Food wise I love the Bulan Thai on Santa Monica Bulevard, across the Erewhon store. The area down the sunset boulevard towards silverlake is one of my favorites. They have salsa parties on the street on some nights.
And then there is Pasadena, a lovely place to meet friends for lunch around the old town Pasadena.
I used to be a Charmed geek, so I’d tell anyone who was that as well to check out the house that served as the Mansion of the series in Angelino Heights.
And of course Venice Beach, the roller skater park is a must to have a nice afternoon/evening in the sun, watching people roller skate dance.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
ShoutOut to my teacher Caroline McPherson, who taught me the gentle approach to working with my body and how soft persistence gets you to places you could not have dreamed of.
Also a shoutout to all those amazing singers and musicians out there who keep inspiring me every day with their wonderful talent and amazing craft.
