We had the good fortune of connecting with Welkin Tang and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Welkin, we’d love to hear what makes you happy.
The thing that makes me the most happy about photography is exploration. I’ve seen a lot of places that I’m not sure I would have been motivated to go if it weren’t for me taking pictures when I get there. Philosophically, I can also explore the characteristics of different cities in my street photography and how to bring different situations to life or heighten them in my fashion photography.

Overall, having a camera and being able to see or think about something I want to create and then map it all out, execute and be able to share it with the world really brings me a lot of joy. We’re really in one of the best times ever to present our work to the world.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My photography is more or less about everyday life. What sets me apart from others at this point is my fascination with and desire to heighten ordinary tasks like commuting, listening to music, reading, and the like.

Professionally, I’ve gotten to where I am by always pushing for more and never seeing myself as having “done it.” I always want to look for that next edge. I think a lot of art is a communal experience so I create the things I do to be seen and shared whether it’s online or in person. So what I want people to know might differ by the project because photography is sort of a language. An overarching theme within my work is preservation and appreciation. I want others to be able to appreciate these everyday situations, scenes and details as I do.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I had a friend coming a on a trip to LA, I would definitely take them to Tokki in Koreatown. They have a beef intestine dish that’s to die for; crisp, creamy, everyone has to try it. Some of my friends eat plant-based so we would HAVE TO make a stop at Monty’s Good Burger, a specialty plant-based burger restaurant with locations throughout LA. It’s actually one of my favorite burger places overall. And most importantly, we’d have to get coffee at Stereoscope.

Outside of food and drinks, I’d take someone to the Griffith Observatory to see a sunset and The Huntington to appreciate the beautiful Japanese Garden.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My fashion photography absolutely wouldn’t be what it is without the models I’ve worked with. I’d especially like to give a shoutout to Katy Ho. @_katyho (Instagram). She worked with me on several projects last year and us talking through a lot of the thought processes for shots really provided me a lot of insight.
