Meet Wendy Thorlakson Svehlak | Producer & Entrepreneur

We had the good fortune of connecting with Wendy Thorlakson Svehlak and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Wendy, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I used to be a filmmaker. I have been in the entertainment industry most of my life. After getting married and having a child (and having Harvey Weinstein negatively affect my career) Hollywood just wasn’t practical for me anymore. I could not make movies and a family at the same time. I took some time off to raise my little girl and help my husband occasionally with his business. My husband Dr. Steven Svehlak is a successful plastic surgeon with his own practice in Beverly Hills. Being married to a plastic surgeon has it’s perks, one being getting my Botox injections in my kitchen. I started inviting friends over to get discounted Botox in my kitchen. Pretty soon, the word spread and I needed more room so I rented out a room at our club and started doing discounted Botox and Bubbles events for my friends and other club members. We even incorporated dermal filler injections as well. These events started to gain a following and I noticed the behavior of the women starting to change from secrecy to support. The same women who used to hide the fact that they had anything done to their faces now started to brag about what they got and how much better they felt. They started to support each other and talk about all of their intended procedures. The taboo was gone and now getting Botox was similar to having your hair colored, or getting your nails done. It occurred to me that if I created a fun space nearby for these women to come together more often, they probably would. Why drive into town if you could get quality service close to home. So I set out to find a space and then design the look. I also wanted to incorporate medical grade skincare into the plan because healthy skin is the best place to start when you are trying to look young and healthy. I wanted to design a space where you could easily try products before you buy them. Even create a “Bar” where you and your friend could give yourselves facials and try products while you wait for each other to get your injections. So working with my husband and his medical expertise, we created The Aesthetics Bar.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The Aesthetics Bar is one of a kind. It is a high end injectable spa where you and your friends can hang out, try medical grade skincare products and be treated by Beverly Hills professionals. The doctors schedule patients on select days when they can leave their practices to treat patients here. It is also a highly Instagramable place that people love to take selfies in. We only carry a few products that are scientifically proven to improve your skin. We have interactive smart mirrors that analyze your skin for you and a DIY Facial Bar where you can instantly see improvements in your skin.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We live on the Beach so that is where we love to be. Sometimes we use our electric bikes to ride up and down the coast and have lunch at some of our favorite spots like Captain Kidds in Redondo, Fishing with Dynamite in Manhattan Beach and Playa Provisions in Playa Del Rey. We also have foam longboard surfboards that we can attach to a trailer on our bikes in case we want to stop and go in the water. We love to walk around Marina Del Rey or rent little Duffy Boats and take a Harbor Cruise. There is also kayaking or stand up paddle boarding depending on how wet you want to get. We Love wine tasting and will set them up anywhere. Beach, Park Boats anywhere. During the summer they have concerts in the park where you can listen to the music from the boats. Some of our favorite restaurants in Marina Del Rey are Sapori, Salt and Kazunori. We also like to walk around Playa Del Rey where there are several fun dive bars and restaurants all within a few blocks of each other.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Honestly, there are a lot of people. I am very lucky to have my family and the most incredible friends who have always supported me in all of my wacky ideas.
