We had the good fortune of connecting with Wendy Whitmore and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Wendy, what do you want your legacy to be?
I want to be remembered as a human being that was compassionate, a lover of the community and always after Gods true heart, by being a servant to his people. I love yo serve, it is what has kept me moving forward. I am honored to be in the position that I am in where I can assist others on their healing journeys. I want to pass down to my 4 heartbeats: Jailen, Khatelan, Jasmine and Tiara, the spirit of compassion & vulnerability. I want them to always be vocal and vulnerable so that they speak their truth and allow themselves to stay open, connected and curious.
What should our readers know about your business?
I believe what sets me a part from others in my field is that from the beginning I was willing to adapt to the needs of my Comnunity. I knew that people of color aren’t always comfortable with going to therapy, and so very early on in my career I started finding ways to bring therapy to the people. Along with studying psychology in undergrad I also majored in ethnic studies. Back then people could not understand why someone who wanted to be a therapist, would see the importance of studying other cultures as well. For me it made total sense, because in order to help others I needed to understand where they were coming from. And so this is what I relied upon to bring therapy to the people.
I am most excited about this new business venture that allows me to combine wellness, self-love, self-care and traditional therapy. With WLW HEALING HOUSE, I am excited to bring even more unique wellness services to
the people. This new arm of my business has been in the making for the last five years and I am so excited to share it.
One of the challenges of being a Womanpreneur has been my health. I have two chronic illness that have shaped how I move through life. Very early on in my career I was diagnosed with a chronic illness that affects my bladder. And because of this chronic illness I’ve had to have four procedures on my bladder to help increase its functionality. With each procedure I felt like I lost valuable time in growing my business; yet about 6.5 years ago, I started seeing my chronic illness as less of a burden and more of a blessing. It was because of my chronic illness that I originally decided to become a Womanpreneur. And it was also because of this chronic illness that I started to see SelfCare and SelfLove as a necessity.
I feel like as I am fully entering into my 40’s (I’ll be 41 on December 15th), I am starting to allow myself to settle into this amazing life that I have worked so hard for. I am learning to give myself grace and grace to those that support me as well. It has been a beautiful yet difficult journey and I am looking forward to seeing where it takes me next.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love the beach, the mountains and the desert. So with that being said if I had a week to indulge in all things interesting, fun and worthwhile, I’d have to spend two days at the beach on a beachfront property. We’d then travel to Lake Arrowhead to enjoy some peace and see Gods beauty up close. And we’d cap it off in Palm Spring’s riding ATV’s, doing a little gambling at the casino, spending time at the spa and indulging in some great food.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
When I decided to become a Womanpreneur in 2013, it was a very scary thing. I had so many reservations and doubts; yet I come from a family of Womanpreneurs and entrepreneurs. On April 30 2013, Truth Healing & Evolution Counseling Services was born. And I was so fortunate that my dad Aaron Hodges JR. stepped in to pay my office rent for a year. My mother Ruth Jackson-Ward was my teacher as she too was a Womanpreneur. My grandfather Windel Whitmore Sr was an entrepreneur and he taught me from a young age to be diligent, curious and ambitious. My grandmother Ruthie Jackson, always allowed me to lay my head in her lap and on her shoulder when I just needed to take a break. My heartbeats have given me the courage to keep moving and Dominick my partner since 1995 has allowed me to be me. And there has been so many others in my village that has pushed, prayed and guided me along the way.
I have now been in business for myself for 7.5 years and it is because of them that in February of 2021 I will open WLW HEALING HOUSE, a full scale wellness center where my private practice Truth Healing & Evolution Counseling Services, will provide all the therapeutic services, both traditional and unconventional.
