Meet William Hutton | Interior Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with William Hutton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi William, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
Probably that the industry involves a million moving parts. Not only is it sourcing furniture & finishes but it is dealing with multiple vendors, timelines, samples, communication, management, coordination. Each piece of furniture could require many levels of involvement like design, finish, fabric, details, drawings, wood tone, etc. Multiply that to fill a room, let alone a full home, and it’s quite eye opening! Clients often question how long it may take to confirm designs and decisions because they don’t realize the many facets of each piece.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’ve been working in the design industry for almost 15 years at various firms but pushing to create my own business has been the most challenging as well as rewarding professional move. There is no doubt that every professional experience I have had has molded what I create today. Nothing comes easy if it’s worth it and that is all too true in creating my own business. I moved to California with my husband with no connections so building up a network, while time consuming, is the savior of any business. Neighbors and acquaintances have led to numerous projects that will hopefully lead to others. Biggest lesson is to push through the tough times and have patience. I firmly believe that if you put out good work, are determined and kind, that things will come.
My business story is one of hard work and dedication, trying to absorb and learn from everyone around me. Like when I create a space of layered collection, it is full of many aspects, styles, and moments coming together to form a beautiful thing.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them to the Getty museum, Santa Monica pier, lunch at Malibu farms and maybe dinner at Geoffry’s. Probably hit up the Grove like most tourists and dinner at AOC. Relaxing stroll/hike from Fern Dell to Griffith and of course coffee and a pastry at The Trails Cafe.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My former employer/colleague Bryan Young of Young Projects architecture firm. He pushed me to grow professionally through his trust in my thoughts and ideas. He instilled my slowly growing confidence. He made working fun and inspiring through his ethics, personality, and interesting projects.
