We had the good fortune of connecting with Wing-Benn Deng, PhD, Dipl. AC &CH, LAc. and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Wing, other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?
The most significant decision I made that contributed to my success as a practitioner of acupuncture and Traditional Chinese medicine is to prioritize individualized patient care. I believe it’s crucial to give each patient the attention they need, treating them as unique individuals and tailoring treatment protocols accordingly. While modern acupuncture practices often face time, cost, and profit constraints influenced by insurance policies, I chose to follow the ancient lineage of Traditional Chinese Medicine, maintaining a more personal approach. My goal is to treat each patient with the dignity and care I would give to my own family members, being a good listener and a role model for their overall well-being.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’m grateful to have the opportunity to be a licensed acupuncturist and also serve as an instructor and clinical supervisor in the field of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Over the past 20 years of teaching and supervising, I’ve learned valuable insights from my peers, colleagues, students, and patients. Like any other profession, the beginning wasn’t easy, but I firmly believed in perseverance, love, care, continuous learning, and sharing knowledge with others to keep my spirits high throughout the years.
My journey to this profession took an unexpected turn when, a year before choosing this path, I was majoring in a premed program at UCSD due to a brain tumor diagnosis. This health challenge allowed me to experience the complexities of medical processes and care firsthand. Through my true Buddhism practice of Nichiren Shoshu Buddhism, which I’ve been following since the age of 8, I found the meaning and purpose of my life, guiding me towards the ancient holistic healing art of Traditional Chinese Medicine instead of pursuing a path in Western medical school.
I am proud of the path I’ve chosen and the difference I can make in people’s lives through individualized care and personalized treatments. My commitment to patients and dedication to Traditional Chinese Medicine principles have driven my success. I approach my practice with genuine compassion, expertise, and a holistic approach to healing, aiming to continue learning and sharing my knowledge to promote wellness and well-being.
