We had the good fortune of connecting with Xiao Hua Yang and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Xiao Hua, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
Most cultures, at least the cultures that I know of, value perseverance very much. I’ve heard countless stories where the protagonist keeps trying and trying and finally achieves his goal in the end. As I grow older, I gradually learned that giving up could be just as virtuous and wise as keeping going. I think most people fear that they give up too quickly without really pushing themselves to the limit. Yes, there is no denying that certain goals can be achieved with relentless effort and perseverance. But I think it’s equally important to know where the limit is, and that has a lot to do with our characteristics, personality and temperament? As I start to know myself better, I realize that there are certain things I will never be able to do no matter how hard I try or how long I keep going. For example, I am quite positive that I will never be an NBA player, doesn’t matter how hard I try. A fish shouldn’t put itself in a long-distance running contest with a herd of horses, while a camel may want to push itself to win.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve always liked art when I was growing up. Later I decided to pursue it more seriously. My family doesn’t know exactly what I do, but luckily, they are supportive. Personally speaking, it has not been easy at all. But I always try to be positive. I think one of the biggest struggles all artists more or less share is self-doubt — we doubt our ability to create all the time, especially with the rise of social media, comparison with other artists has been made easy than ever. Sometimes it’s getting hard to drive others’ voices out of your head. With that being said, I am learning to focus more on my own work and really pay attention to what I want to express.
