We had the good fortune of connecting with Xingyu(Yves) Lu and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Xingyu(Yves), we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
“Lights, camera, action!” These are the typical words you hear on set while filming. Many people have a stereotype about the film industry, imagining it as a world of big, fancy stages, glamorous roles, and constant admiration from the public. While there’s some truth to that perception, as an independent producer, the reality is quite different. The industry involves long 12-hour days on set and daily stress. It’s not as straightforward or fun as it may seem from the outside. However, the reason I continue to stay in the industry is the immense satisfaction that comes when the final project screens. At that moment, all the hard work and challenges were worth it. Meeting and collaborating with talented, creative individuals motivates me to keep telling stories and striving to make a significant visual impact on audiences.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
FIlm was not something I studied throughout my school life, but I have always had a passion for creating stories and sharing them with society. When I first started my career as an independent producer, it was far from easy. I moved to LA with no resources, no network, and no idea what to expect from the industry. Networking is crucial for a filmmaker as it helps establish a team, bring the crew and cast together, and complete projects. Initially, I was scared when I realized I lacked the team and resources I needed. However, I reminded myself that I had to build my network from scratch and rely on my own efforts.
I started making phone calls and talking to potential crew and cast members. Sometimes, I found the right people and other times; things didn’t go as planned. This process taught me how to communicate better and find the right people for my projects. One of the key lessons I’ve learned is that you are the only person who truly cares about your project. Don’t expect others to handle things exactly the way you want them to. This realization is not a complaint but a reality that has helped me build my organizational skills and gain hands-on experience in every step of film production.
I hope that one day my work will be recognized by a wider audience. I also wish for the production company I am currently working with to set a new standard in the industry.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Griffith Observatory is undoubtedly one of my favorite spots to show friends when they visit. Perched high above the city, it offers a breathtaking panoramic view of Los Angeles. During the day, you can see the sprawling cityscape, but it’s at night when the real magic happens. The city lights up in a mesmerizing display, making you feel like you are living in a place brimming with potential and endless opportunities.
Standing there, gazing out over the illuminated expanse, I often find peace and clarity. Like a sea of stars, the city’s vibrant lights inspire awe and excitement. It’s a place to clear my mind, reflect on my journey, and immerse myself in the possibilities.
The observatory is a marvel, with its iconic architecture and rich history adding to the experience. Whether peering through telescopes at distant planets or exploring the exhibits inside, a sense of wonder and discovery permeates the air.
When I bring friends to Griffith Observatory, I want them to experience the stunning views and the inspiration and tranquility this place offers me. It reminds me why I chose to pursue my dreams in this city and fills me with renewed determination to seize every opportunity. The observatory is more than just a tourist attraction; it’s a sanctuary where I can dream, plan, and envision all the incredible things I hope to achieve in Los Angeles.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a heartfelt shoutout to my parents and host family, who supported me during high school here in the US. Their encouragement means the world to me. My host dad often said, “You only live once, so do whatever you want.” People have many opportunities to pursue their passions but often become afraid of reality and give up too quickly. At times, they might lose sight of their dreams. However, thanks to my parents’ and friends’ unwavering support and motivation, I always managed to find my way back and continue pursuing what I love.
