We had the good fortune of connecting with Yanira Vissepo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Yanira, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
To be nobody but
yourself in a world
which is doing its best day and night to make you like
everybody else means to fight the hardest battle
which any human being can fight and never stop fighting.
E.E. Cummings
A quote to live by – to just be myself. Such a straightforward way of thinking, oftentimes hard to remember.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The way I create oftentimes comes from inertia, a feeling I can’t escape. It tends to be a repeated thought. I can only describe it as rumination. When I notice this happening, I have to turn myself into the studio and create. I like to describe my practice as a form of therapy. As a self taught artist I have learned a lot of lessons, and will keep learning. I have learned to never give up. Persist with what I am working with to keep going.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them out of Nashville and visit a nice hiking spot. Preferably, with a waterfall! Then we would drive out to Chattanooga and stay the night – visit the aquarium and the art museum the next day. We would be like two birds gliding with the wind.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My sensei Richard Steiner who taught me how to learn, teach, and have confidence in making art.
