Meet YELLA Kim | Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with YELLA Kim and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi YELLA, what do you want people to remember about you?
In the past, I wanted to present a masterpiece filled with grand meaning to the world. As a result, each work carried a lot of ambition, and I realized it could become a burden to the audience. It also became a burden to me. My thoughts have changed a bit now. I want to honestly convey the stories of my present self, in the moment I exist. Because this moment will soon disappear, and if I tell false stories now, my past will be falsely remembered. I believe the stories I can tell now can only be told now. I hope that my small, honest stories as an artist will accumulate over time, and eventually, I will be remembered in a multidimensional way. The stories of my life will become my legacy, filled with joy, sadness, depression, and anxiety. This is my legacy and who I am.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My biggest distinguishing feature is that I don’t limit myself. I know that I don’t belong to any genre or scene. I see it as both a strength and a weakness.
What I’m proud of is that I’ve survived until now. I don’t want to be an artist who succeeds quickly and fails just as fast. I want to continue telling my story for a long time. What excites me about the future is that I don’t know what kind of life I’ll lead, so I look forward to the stories I’ll tell later. I’ll experience a lot of love and many breakups. I’ll achieve many successes and face even more failures. Despite all that, I’ll survive and keep telling my story, just like I do now. I’m eager to hear the stories of my future self.
I don’t think my current position is high, but getting here wasn’t easy. However, I held onto hope and saw music as a means to express my emotions and life, not just a way to make money. That’s what helped me endure until now.
What I’ve learned is that we need to keep love in our hearts. The world is filled with anger, and I often find myself influenced by it. That’s why it’s even more important to hold onto love and to think and speak freely. If we confine our thoughts within certain boundaries, it’s hard to create something better.
The philosophy I want to share is that our moments pass by so quickly, and we often move on without even realizing they’ve gone. That’s why we need to cherish our small moments and be consciously present in this world. If we do that, I believe our moments will be truly magnificent.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I recommend Seoul. Despite its size, each neighborhood has a unique culture, making it possible to explore in just a week. Personally, I suggest Mapo-gu. It has many cozy bars and various restaurants. Dongmyo is also great; it’s where I buy clothes. They sell vintage items, and many elderly people come to buy and sell clothes. You’ll love the blend of past and present there.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am currently part of a crew called V/hr and a team called Pizza.zip. I want to express my gratitude to all the members of this crew and team. Especially to Xydo hyung, who discovered me when I had no career and has guided me ever since. He has been like a best friend at times and a mentor at other times, offering advice and encouragement. Sometimes it’s frustrating, but I love Xydo hyung. Without him, Pizza.zip, where I am currently active, wouldn’t have been created. I am always thankful.
