We had the good fortune of connecting with YOSH Han and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi YOSH, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
When I started my business, I definitely burned the candle at both ends, working across multiple time zones, wearing lots of hats. I was successful but burnt out. I was very ambitious and feel proud of my accomplishments.

Now, I try to minimize my laptop hours by being more focused and efficient as well as outsource manufacturing, shipping and bookkeeping so I can spend more time being in creative flow.

I’ve learned to schedule personal time including setting boundaries so my clients understand that I need time to be innovation mode.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Early in my career, there were not as many artisan or indie perfumers from USA and certainly not many who were making fragrances in their home studio who were also creating vibrational perfumes attuned with chakra energy.

I feel proud of my work both as an individual and brand but more so as a champion of other indie perfumers and producing events that included my friends and peers.

Traditionally, the fragrance industry was Euro-centric and patriarchal but I was determined to shift that.

Over the last few years, I’ve been able to shine the light through promoting West Coast Perfumery & producing events like the International Artisan Fragrance Salon, and Digital Scent Festival specifically bringing attention to BIPOC perfumers and also bringing awareness around the need to change the language around “oriental” as a fragrance category.

It is an amazing time to be in the industry now because the tide has changed and it’s much more innovative and inclusive now than 20 years ago when I first started.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m from LA but spent a chunk of my career in SF and abroad but now I’m back in SoCal and have fallen in love through a different lens. I started sailing out of Marina Del Rey where I’m a member of Women’s Sailing Association and Fairwind Yacht Club and race there in the summer.

I swim in Alamitos Bay down in Long Beach and love hanging out in Venice and shop along Abbot Kinney or I also enjoy Sawtelle Blvd where there are awesome Japanese restaurants.

I found an amazing spot for ceremonial tea and events in Playa Del Rey called Ayam. And for all things scent related, I go to The Institute for Art and Olfaction in Chinatown.

For the best Asian Food, I hang with my parents in the San Gabriel Valley.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a shout out to Scent Trunk where I have been lucky enough to serve as their Creative Director for the last 1.5 years. My team is amazing. We collaborate seamlessly and allow each other’s strengths to shine.

We produce original editions with different artisan perfumers monthly and quarterly; I have been fortunate to work with very talented award winning Noses.
