We had the good fortune of connecting with Zee Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Zee, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Every small business owner takes a risk when starting a business and I am no exception. When I first started my business, many of my friends and family thought I was crazy. If you aren’t a small business owner, or have ideas to start one, most people thrive in knowing they will have the same pay check and stability. Risk is involved with every step of the way. You have to have an idea, know the route to make the idea come to fruition, and ultimately have the research that your business is necessary. I started a business because I knew there was a demand for quality care providers. Yet, I wasn’t recreating the wheel. There were others who had done what I planned, so I had to differentiate. I had to make sure what I was doing was unique. Along the way, you will also have competition or others who see your success and want to do the same. You continuously have to reinvent yourself to make your business current, relevant, and enticing to potential clients. You now throw in the Pandemic, and you have to set yourself up to have a business that can exist no matter the worst of circumstances. Risk will always be there, but working through that risk can lead to great reward.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Not Just Baby Sitters was created with the idea that care providers are more than babysitters. Anyone can step up to say they are qualified to take care of children but that is not the case. A nanny is a role model for children…and therefore must lead by example when it comes to education, health, lifestyle. In addition to background and reference checks for all candidates, we also spend time getting to know our nannies so our network is more of an extended family tree. We want to introduce you to our nannies because they are amazing! Our company has grown by word of mouth and excellent referrals from our loyal clients. Has it always been easy? Of course not! Yet we have learned from our mistakes and grown in ways that have made us bigger and better. One lesson that we have learned is that it’s important to build personal relationships in order to better understand each client’s needs. And we care! I wouldn’t place a nanny that I wouldn’t hire to care for my own child.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When it comes to LA, you have to head to Inn at the Seventh Ray for a special dining experience! It’s our favorite. You should also head to the beach and take in the view through the palm trees. You could devour an amazing cupcake from Sprinkles Cupcakes in Beverly Hills. The Red Velvet Vegan is amazing! You can’t go wrong driving and exploring each neighborhood to get cuisine of all kinds!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I wouldn’t be where I am today without the love and support of my family. I shout out to the strong females in my life who have paved the way for women like myself to have unlimited opportunities. My Mother was a huge part of my life and when we lost her in 2019, I was devastated. Yet, she would want me to continue to work hard, be a great Mother and wife. I think of her daily.
