We had the good fortune of connecting with Zeek Ruvalcaba and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Zeek, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When I first started working I knew that the 9-5 wasn’t something I wanted to be doing for the rest of my life, specially if I wasn’t focusing my own time into my own business and self care. The amount of times I told myself what do I have to lose if I don’t give it a shot always crossed my mind. Starting my full time journey as an artist definitely scared me but did not know the amazing feeling and self love it brought to me. There are days when work is slow but definitely don’t regret taking this jump into building my own brand as an artist.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I feel like my art is definitely filled of current situation and emotions that my life has gone through at the time being in my Journey of a full time artist. I mainly work with customizing for others and creating what some people think they can’t create because lack of skills or just don’t have that talent. Being able to bring to life what they have in mind and seeing the reaction and happiness fills me with my own type of happiness. I love being able to do my own personal artwork but for some reason seeing others happy and expressed the joy to me of what I have created that they had in mind is definitely a plus. The main thing that keeps me excited for this journey is the fact that I left my job mid September 2020, and till this day I am still living off of what I love and I am also able to travel and not worry about not getting the time at a job. I am my own boss and work on my own schedule and definitely get to enjoy the ups and downs the life as a full time artist comes with. To some it may be a lot in the place that I am in right now but for me I know there is definitely more to come with my journey as a full time artist. I definitely want to achieve more art gallery shows and also find my own art collectors that will see my art as one of a kind as I do myself. Honestly when becoming your own boss and building your brand / art career it definitely comes with its ups and downs! I’ve had times were I definitely don’t make nothing at all (money) I get scared I won’t be able to find a way to pay for my bills with my art but as I am ready to give up I look up and see the positive side of it and realize that I am in control of what I make in order to live. So for sure the hustle never stops. The art world is endless of new opportunities and ways to create in order to make some type of income, and definitely always thanking God for what he brings and gives me. Of course those who support me and share my art definitely do more than just a simple share. Money isn’t everything but you need the money to buy the food we eat.. since I left my corporate job I realize that I had to become my own boss but not just that also my own marketing agent.. I have to make sure that I keep up with what I post and how I sell my art to others. Definitely my name Zeek ruvalcaba, will be a name to remember or to come familiar with because my art will be everywhere. The name will be something to remember & to inspire others to never give up on your dreams and goals because you never know where those crazy dreams might take you don’t be afraid to take that jump and do what you love because at the end of the day if you quit one good corporate job that doesn’t mean that there won’t be another one around the corner.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Personally the streets and alleyways just show them the free and unknown galleries that people seem to miss. With that being said the street art that surrounds us and we tend not to give it the same attention as if it were to be in a gallery. Regarding food places I’d definitely have to take them to any and every food truck around town. The flavors in the food here is amazing and definitely one of a kind! As or just simply hanging out definitely being at the beach and relaxing and soaking up the beauty life has to offer. For me one of the main things that I feel are exciting to see would definitely have to be with the world keep us to explore I feel like nowadays were too busy to even realize what amazing things there are with simply just stepping outside maybe to a national Park the beach or a simple lake.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
In all honesty if I had the time to give a shout out to all the people that have supported me and have been there for me on my journey into becoming a full-time artist and where I am today I’d honestly have to write a book because of how many people I could just think of to thank. I have a supportive family that have been there since day one and never doubted me also amazing high school teachers that definitely helped me realize that you could definitely live off of what you love. The friends who pushed me to just say “ what the heck” and every single different person on social media that has also helped. Once I make it to the top which I will know for sure but I’ll definitely be able to thank those special to me and have been there since day one. Without a doubt I am definitely lucky for those who are on my side and support me. The shout out definitely goes to those I love and to those who support me. Friends family teachers and others on social media that I have yet to meet.
